AMD64 2800+ performance issue

Hi all,

I've tested my 6800GT in someone else's computer and they get 4900 3dmarks in 3dmark05. I get around 2800. I have an AMD64 2800+ with an Asus K8V-X mobo (sckt754). My friend has an Abit board scket 939 with an AMD64 3000+. Both are running not so great ram, I've only got Mushkin basic (1GB).

Any idea why I'm running so much worse? Is the 2800+ to 3000+ and socket 754 to 939 that much of a leap? I've got 800mhz hypertransport whereas he has 1000.

I'll try to answer any more questions you might have for me but I'm so frustrated right now it's not funny.

TIA

Hmm...may be a stupid question, but are you sure Vsync is off?

(Not that I think a 6800GT would get anywhere near 60fps in any 3dmark05 test, I own one :p)

being as 3dmark05 almost has no detriment from different ram/mobo, I would say there is an error, check brivers and bios!

The Hypertransport 800 versus 1000 yields no difference in performance. If your friend has a 3000+ 939 chip the dual channel may give a boost but certainly not more than a few hundred points. There is definitely something going on in the configuration

reinstalled via, took care of that problem; I'm probably going to have to post a new thread but when I was trying to run 3dmark the computer kept shutting off or closing the program. I was guessing it was closing it because of a trojan, but when I unplugged my internet connection the computer just restarted while running 3dmark05. Any ideas?

edit: 4914 3dmarks when I ran it and it did complete (after about 7 tries)

Was the external power connector plugged in? I have a 6600GT, and I forgot to plug in the connector once... My system would crash whenever I did anytihng 3d-related. A couple of times it actually completed a run, but I'd only get like 2000 points. After I plugged it in, I got 3500 points, no crashes

Unless you need to force the molex in with something like a vice...? I plugged it in as far as I could and it doesn't give me trouble with 3d in particular. It's indiscriminate as to what I'm doing. Sometimes it just feels like restarting.

I was reading on one forum that it may have been hard drive related, so I ran WD's drive scanner and it came up fine. I really don't want to jump out on a limb but does it look like it might be mobo related at all? I think the truepower should be holding up pretty well, its rails are set at 12.01 and 5.01v.

edit: I just ran 3dmark05 and I walked in as it was finishing. When it went to retrieve the marks the program just turned off. I just reformatted and have only installed video, audio, chipset, SP2, Symantec NAV10 and Firefox.

Maybe just try re-checking all your connections (pci cards inserted right, ide cables, etc.). Check BIOS settings. RAM timings. Other than that, just wish you luck!

But no reason as to why programs would just close huh? I'm lost and I don't know what to do. I could just buy all new stuff but my wallet doesn't want to do that right now, especially because I have pretty decent components. Thanks for the suggestions though

If it's a virus, like you suggested, try running a virus check.

Have you run ad-aware and spybot recently to check for spy-ware? If not do that.

Things are looking better after a reformat and a bios clear. I'm at 4904 and no viruses shown using my school's NAV client. It hasn't reset yet and I'm leaving my box on top of my desk just so that it won't restart on me lol. Thanks for all your help
