Hope someone can help me, I have just fitted an AMD 2800 cpu, when I start up or view system info it says I am running an AMD 1100 (my previous CPU).
Do I need to do something else to get this set up......sorry to be so stoopid

I asume you are refering to an Athlon XP, and not a A64. It would help a lot of you could tell us your full system specs, especialy the motherboard..

Are you sure your motherboard supports your new CPU? My first guess is that the multiplier and FSB settings need changed.

Sorry, the CPU is an AMD XP 2500+ Barton
The motherboard is ASRock K7S8X, 512 DDR ram
Asus Ti4800 graphics card
Windows xp sp2
The motherboard box says fsb333mhz - A462 socket

Thanks again, hope you can help

Here is a link to the manual for your motherboard in case you don't have it. Manual. You will need to set the jumpers for a 166mhz FSB. Your CPU uses a multiplier of 11, and your old CPU used a FSB of 100mhz, which is what your jumpers are currently set for, giving you a cpu speed of 1100mhz. Change the jumpers for a 166mhz fsb, and you'll get the correct CPU speed of 1826mhz(166x11).

Thank you very much.
I tried setting the bios to 166, the computer started....got so far and then switched off totally.
I suppose I need to set the jumpers manually.
Very grateful for your help guys.

Have set the jumper setting to 133. System now recognizes the cpu, it says using multiplier of 11, is this automatic or do I need to set something else up.
Sorry to be a pain and thanks very much stevty for the manual link.

The multiplier is detected automaticly, you don't need to change anything there. If it was shutting off with the FSB set to 166, it may have been getting too hot, but thats the correct setting for that CPU, it should be 166x11.

OK thanks.
One other thing, my comp crashes out completely every now again, just shuts off, the light on the keyboard stays on, to restart I have to switch off the power from the mains wait a couple of secs switch power back and then start up.
I thought maybe the cpu was starting to fail, hence the new one.....any suggestions?

That's probably your problem then, your old psu cant handle the load of a 2800+.

You'll need to upgrade to a quality power supply.

OK thank you for the advice, will get one today.
This was happening before I fitted the new cpu though, was running an amd 1100.

I must say, this forum is fantastic, I have subsrcibed to others in the past that are next to useless....

It does sound like your PSU is a bit weak. It should have a label on the side, saying how many watts it is, and what the Amps are on each rail. My guess is the 12v rail is probably a bit weak, if you could give us some more info on your PSU..

Thanks once again.
I have fitted a new 550watt psu and everything seems fine, the old one was 250watt.
I am disappointed with the performance from my graphics card however, its an asus v9480 nvidia GeForce Ti4800, this was highly recommended by a couple of gamers, but it does not seem any better than my old mx440. I was hoping to play Doom3 but doubt that it will be up to it. :(

Turn off shadows, having that enabled results in a large performance hit! :(

Comparing any "MX" to any "Ti" is Oranges to Lemons, sizewise, at least, but the next step upward is Oranges to Graprefruit! You have to PAY fairly dearly for a lot of FPS speed. Even a year-old 9700 Pro is still over $100, and a 9800 is close to $200 still. I have a GF3 Ti 500, a GF4 Ti 4200, and an FX 5900 in the PC's on my home LAN . None are well suited to Doom3, according to reviews that I've read. But that matters little to me, personally, since I consider the FPS genre to be more closely related to Console Play anyway, which I never liked.
