Problem:
Just bought an AMD Athlon XP 3200+ ?Barton? processor but when I plugged it in it only registered as a 2500+. So I figured the FSB was set too low in BIOS and just like I thought it was sitting at 166Mhz. So I bumped it up to 200Mhz and saved the settings. But on reboot the system wont post. So I rebooted again and this time it goes to the WinXP boot screen but then freezes. Tried a few more times and either it wont post at all or freezes during boot. I can?t seem to figure out what is causing the freezes.
System Info:
Motherboard: MSI K7N2 Delta-L
RAM: 1 gig DDR3200 Dual Channel (2x512 MB)
Vid: GeForce FX 5700 Ultra
Power Supply: 400w
Troubleshooting I?ve tried:
-BIOS has been updated, although the original BIOS was able to handle the 3200+ according to the manual. It?s supposed to be an over clocking motherboard so I don?t think its causing the freeze ups.
-I checked the processor to make sure they sent me the right one and the tag on the chip says AMD3200.
-The ram is DDR3200 that should handle the 200Mhz FBS, but someone suggested trying 1 chip in the system at a time (not sure why that would help) but it didn?t work.
-Someone suggested that perhaps the power supply wasn?t adequate enough, so I tried unhooking some fans and my 2 hard drives as well as the CDROM but it still freezes.
-Checked all cooling and the system is running pretty cold at an average of 42 degrees.
-Also since I have an nForce2 chipset, I used nVidia?s system tool to up the FSB while in windows and it crashes the machine as soon as the ?apply? button is hit.
I?m pretty much stumped with this problem, its frustrating me because I can?t imagine what is causing the freezes. Any help is appreciated!
