AMD XP 2600+

Did I miss the thread on this one? Seems like everybody would be talking about this. Comes clocked at 2133MHz and overclocked to 2340 on air-cooling with just a slight voltage increase. It was pretty much a toss up with the P4 2.53 in most of the benchmarks. This is the "B" version of the thoroughbred, although they were not clear on the differences from the first one. One thing was clear, at these speeds the 266MHz fsb was definately a bottleneck. But my thinking is pick up a slower version and overclock the fsb. Or simply unlock the monster and run it at 333 or 400MHz speeds. I don't think it would be unreasonable to to see 2500MHz with a little more core voltage and good water cooling. Match that up with a 400MHz DDR system and those P4's overclocked at 3.0GHz+ are gonna have some real competition. I just read Toms review and with some sort of ice cooling 2880 MHz was obtained. I was so tempted to take the P4 1.6a or 1.8a when the original thoroughbred was found to have very little overclocking potential. But, as the old saying goes, patience always pay off. Now if I can contain myself just a little longer, I would think as soon as the Barton is realeased a thoroughbred "B" will get real cheap. Woo hoo!!!!!!!! Way to go AMD!!!!!!!!!

Yup, things do look good on the AMD front. I just hope that my new Abit KX7-333 will support the Thoroughbred-B and the Barton...

Those new chips look sweet though. Especially if they end up being 25% cheaper than Intel...

I think AMD is going to really shine once the Hammer comes out though. I have heard that there is a possibility that Intel may have to licence their x86-64 technology.

I don't think there's too much chance of that happening. In fact, I think Wingznut PEZ confirmed that it won't happen, but I could be wrong.

Well yeah, I think there would probably be a snowy day in July before Intel would licence someone else's technology, but you never know.

Any word on Barton's release? And what kinds of speeds will the Socket-A AthlonXP line top out at?

I don't think there's much out there about what speeds the Barton wil be but you can expect they will leave Intel far in the dust. AMD has been sitting in the shadows for too long. They show they had what it takes to top intel when they fix the Thoroughbred core and gvae us something to overclock. I can't wait till the Barton comes out
😀

Intel will hold the performance and speed crown for the rest of this year. They have ramped up clock speeds to a point where AMD just cannot beat the P4. It will not be until Hammer when AMD regains its speed crown. They are just trying to keep up with Intel long enough until they can unleash the Hammer on the world.

Sorry Anne, but I beg to differ. What makes the P4 any better than the Athlon XP? Sure it has better clock speed, but the Athlon more than matches it in terms of performance. The 2600+ chip has to be very early in production. Once they get a few newer steppings out it should be very competetive, even with a 3.0ghz P4. Both chips are done on the 0.13 process, and it has been proven that the Athlon XP can compete with the P4. Remember, it wasn't all that long ago that AMD crushed Intel in every respect, including the early P4 chips.

Actually, XP2600+ performs more like a PIV 2.53ghz overall. PIV 2.8GHZ whips it in just about every test. PIV will keep the performance crown for the year.

I'm not saying the Athlon sucks and the P4 is kicking its ass all over the place, just that the fastest P4 will beat the fastest AMD in most benchmarks. Unless AMD ramps up clockspeeds significantly and barton provides a good boost of performance we won't see AMD beating intel this year. Sorry, i wish it were the other way around but it probably won't be.

I must agree!

Imho, it's not a big topic around here because they aren't actually available yet. Next month, when people like Insane3D can get their grubby little hands on them, you'll start to see more talk about them.

Hey I just read that AMD is releasing an XP 3000+ in October. Could be interesting. It should be able to beat out the P4 2800, but then the 3066 might beat it. This competition is a very good thing for consumers.

Funny thing is that when Toms hardware OC'd the athlon to a 3400 pr rating, it still didn't beat the P4 in some tests. Now Barton should provide some nice enhancements so you never know.

How high was the FSB when Tom overclocked it? Because at the really high speeds the memory bandwidth of the XP really becomes an issue.
