AMD X6 Thuban WITHOUT a BIOS update?

Could it work?

I'm asking because the MSI DKA790GX is on the list of supported motherboards for the X6 CPUs on MSI's website but the latest BIOS for that board is from back in September of 2009.

My current board (Gigabyte 790GP-DS4H) doesn't have a BIOS listed supporting the X6 CPUs and the latest BIOS is from December 2009.

So I'm wondering, would the X6 CPUs work (at least boot up) without a BIOS update? There isn't too much different from current Phenom II CPUs is there?

Possibly.
In the past when I've tried cpus my motherboard didn't support, it just defaulted the lowest multiplier and bus speed. There's always a chance it just flat out won't boot though.

Sometimes it would post and boot as CPU being unrecognized, maybe even with some handicapped functionality and other times it does not even post.

It seems that it all depends on each scenario and what MB and how MB/BIOS was designed to handle unrecognized CPU from my experience.

Crap okay I thought maybe it was an older one that didn't even support the newer C3 Phenom IIs.

Sadly, I cancelled my order for a 1090T. Only reason I jumped on it was because Tigerdirect had the 1090 with a $50 rebate and I was hoping it might boot at least. Guess I'll just have to wait a while for the BIOS update.

Yeah I know but who knows if my mobo will eventually get support for it...or even if Thuban plays nice with DDR2...which none of the reviews tested.

Plus I realized I probably don't need it. I barely stress my 9850@3GHz enough to justify an upgrade. I'm still sad though. :(

The platinum edition of your board got the update this month, as well as my MSI 770-c45 so I'm not exactly sure why yours has not shown up yet. Oddly, MSI has not updated ANY of their CPU support charts so I guess they're just slow to the mix.

The specs look pretty much identical bewtween your board and the Platinum ... I'd be half tempted to flash with that myself but it's a tough call; not exactly a safe venture if you don't know how to flash your board back to a previous bios in case of failure.

Send MSI an online support center message stating " wtf? ". I'd also check to see if live update 4 might find an updated for you vs using their website.

^Yeah I saw the Platinum version got updated. Unfortunately I have the Gigabyte 790GP-DS4H...I was just using the MSI board as an example.
