AMD x6 or i5-750, help me choose.

The comp will be used for gaming at medresolutions (im not a res. fanatic) with games like starcraft 2, diablo 3, lfd2, codmw2. I also rip a lot of movies with h.264 (Handbrake), and watch them all. thats just besides the general use crap everyone does. I really dont want to have to build another computer for another 2+ years (shooting for 3) but im okay with upgrading ram and video cards in the future.

Heres my two builds.

i5

thuban

Thanks for any advice. I was shooting for an 800$ price point, and for me being a major amd fanboy i'm having a super hard choice with this. Also, my friend asked me to build him his first computer, he wanted something decent for gaming and would be okay for awhile. He was going for a 550 price point not including monitor. If anyone has some spare time and can pick this build apart.

(I cut the price down and left out a video card so i could look for one used for a better price, also, include Oreos and vanilla coke in each build, as snacks are mandatory.)

are you close to a frys?

you can get the thuban + the gigabyte 890 board for 250 AR.

and your friend can get a decent tri-core with 785G motherboard for $88.

I got an i5 its pretty quick

not sure how much faster the AMD would be due to the fact basically no software uses beyond 4 threads unless you're into some pro stuff.

I went with i5. I only game, which it is faster at, and don't do stuff that'd take advantage of the extra cores. Got it and a GA-P55A-UD3(used) for $265 shipped

if you are near microcenter pick up the i7 930 for $199...

murders the x6 in games, especially if you OC it which it does well...and if you pickup a gigabyte board you can dual boot osx if needed 🙂

You know that Murder is against the Law? You want him to be an accessory??

Just sayin is all.

if you actually believe those specs, i have a bridge in china to sell you...

Actually, I didn't pay them much attention. That still doesn't take away from the point of my post which is that it's cheaper to buy the fans from SVC then Newegg.

Here is the exact same fan from Newegg, with the correct specs listed (69CFM):
http://www.newegg.com/product/produc...82E16835103060

$9.99 + $2.99 shipping for each fan

vs

$9.99 + free shipping...and the more you buy the more you save.

But thanks for the offer on the bridge. If you're interested, though...I have a shift button to sell you...

my reference was not exclusively the cfm.. more to the point.

do you really think you're gonna output only 19 db at 2000 rpm?

.........Oh wait, back on topic, are you overclocking?

They say 6 cores are good for encoding so that may be good for you. Then you'd be on the am3 socket for upgrade of CPU too.
You could upgrade the i5 later quite a bit too especially if you were not overclocking it to begin with.

They say that PCIE 3.0 won't be out for another year, enough time for more upgrade-worthy 2.0 cards to arrive and ripen.

back to original topic:

i have spent last 3 weeks reviewing, reading, messaging people and ultimately decided to go with 1055t. i am 2 and half hours away from microcenter and i still chose the 1055t. once i laid EVERYTHING out on the table the 1055t was still cheaper and i do tons of video editing/development. the money i save i would rather invest in an awesome video card or a good video card every year. going this route has much better cost effect on your gaming IMO.

i will be OC'ing my 1055t to 4ghz though to close the gap on all the other chips out there
