I heard that when using a dual core system, especially when playing games that are single threaded, that you need to set the affinity to use a single core...and that doing this will improve performance...is this true?...doesn't that pretty much mean that for 95% of the current games out that one would need to change this affinity since barely any games out are multi-threaded at the moment?

which CPU would I need to disable, CPU 0 or CPU 1, or does it not matter?...does this only need to be done for games or do other applications require changing the affinity setting as well?

download X2 amd driver, then download the microsoft hotfix. Everything is solved, no more setting affinity.

Does the hotfix show up on windows update or is it a seperate download? Do you have a link if it's a seperate download?

Thanks,

Yeah I have wondered this myself. I have never had any problems with my X2, so I am assuming that I had already gotten the update from MS in another bundle. But I couldn't ever find a solo download either.

Hotfix available here: AMDZone

You can get it from MS, but you have to call them and deal with a rep to beg for the patch. Some people claim that MS wanted to charge them for it. It is not a "Windows Update" item yet (probably waiting for SP3).

HL2 would consistently crash on me at random (usually in the 5-20 min range) running on my X2 3800+ until I set the processor affinity - the amd driver + hotfix had no effect. Everything else is stable and happy.
