I was lookin at these YESTERDAY and they were over 1100. I'm sure Monarch will move to a better price soon, but right now the X2 prices seem rather good.

4800's are limited availability of course, but the Fry's in Anaheim had 8 or so I think.

Crash, I agree. In fact, the 3800 Manchester can be had for about a hun over the 3200 Venice. 😀😀😀

Yeah it seems like a waste of money when you can OC a $160 3200+ venice to much HIGHER than the speed of a $1000 cpu... Is dual core worth that much ? I dont think so.

The only one I see is just a hair under $200 at the Egg.

I dont think you were replying to me but. I am also cool,🙂, but thats beside the point.

It was my opinion first off, and I was saying why spend over $600 for a cpu that at stock, will be slower than, and has minimal improvements over an overclocked $150-$200 cpu. I DID NOT say it was a "ripoff" but it seems TO ME, the price/performance ratio is SIGNIFICANTLY better for just overclocking a $150-$200 cpu, than it is spending over $500 just for another core or slightly higher cache.

First the "1000 dollars" I was refering to is the 4800(2.4ghz). And yes I realize you can overclock a dual core cpu also(obviously). Still, is 1 more core worth the price difference. If anyone could benefit from dual cores, it would be me. I do dvd/mpeg2/video encoding as well as Maya and photoshop, and Id still say its not worth it.

I would however say, if the 3800+ drops a bit in price, that may be a great deal on a dual core cpu and may be worth it. I just cant see paying over $300 for a cpu, when you can overclock $200 cpu's so easily and so high. That was my point I was trying to make. Of course maybe thats just my opinion.

 
ur right, you're entitled to your opinion, but i just wanted chime in when you stated these single cores will go MUCH higher than a dual core, when in fact, they are pretty similar in peaks, times two of course.

also dual cores get hotter than single cores.

Both overclock. Don't compare an overclocked cpu with a stock cpu when talking about cost.

would it not be more acurate to compare with a 3700+ 2.2 with 1 meg L2 @$126.36 per Ghz
and the 4400+ @ $124.31 per Ghz
If you need / want the power (I know I would like it but wife my would KILL) The X2 is a GREAT deal you have all the power of dual CPU's and ALL the options that are on the highend/gaming motherboards. 6 months ago you would pay 4 times this amount for a dual cpu setup without all the extras that you can have today.

Wouldn't a DC processor be a bit overkill for a HTPC? Especially since most HTPC casings don't have very elaborate means of cooling a hot processor, and are really built for cool and quiet operation. At most, a Athlon64 3000+, but I would say a 2800+ would od just about anything you could want an HTPC to do.

I was going to swap out my FX55 and put the X2 in my current system. I know the FX55 would still be somewhat overkill for the HTPC, but boy would it be fun to play some HL2 on a 60" display.
