Also, a fan that is similar to the Zalman 9700 is a good thing to have for this processor.

even if it wasn't locked the cpu only has about 200-400 mhz headroom at max. I was going to get it but decided just to go for the e6750 instead.

You're not going to get an X2 past 3.2Ghz on air...

incorrect. If you know what you're doing you can take a 6400 BE to 3.5ghz. I did it.
There's dudes who got 3.6 out of it.

I actually returned it for a refund. Tiger Direct added 2 more 6400+ prorcessors and renamed the one I bought. So when I checked their website they listed it under a slightly different item name (they added a letter at the end, and had two others also with a letter at the end) and all three DID allow refunds...

So I requested an RMA online, sent it in (as defective, since it was), and got my money back. I will just stick with my 2ghz X2 until I get my next update (which is probably gonna be a nehalem)

Yeah. I remember being confused over 6400+ BE when it first came out. Turned out the only thing it had going for it was that AMD wasn't able to supply a stock HSF that'll keep it stable at its default frequency. It's one of the many lame moves AMD took past year. Considering that it had quite a bit of price premium at the time (despite the lack of HSF), and people pay extra for unlocked multipliers, it remains extraordinarily lame marketing-driven stunt to my memory.

Same thing here, i got a 6400+ with ASUS M2N32 Deluxe thinking with the unlocked multiplier i can OC it without increasing FSB but nope its 16x stock. I cant get it past 3.4ghz i get this blue screen message "SYSTEM SERVICE EXCEPTION". For cooling i have a Thermaltake Ultra 120 Extreme in a TT Armor case so it never goes past 40C underload. Also my ram is very overclockable since its 1066mhz but i have it set at 800mhz and i did try increasing my Vcore to 1.5 but still its unstable.

I've decided to swap out my new M3A32-MVP board for the Maximus Formula & wait for the E8400 for both systems...I wanted to do one of each, but AMD is sucking & so far behind in the benchmarks, it really doesn't make sense...I mean hell, I won't even be able to get 300 Mhz outta this so-called top of the line 6400+...That's unacceptable...

Sorry AMD...I stayed loyal as long as I could...(7 years)...
