i am wondering if this cpu should be able to decode dvd's and play games such as CS:S, COD2, and FEAR at the same time, for those that dont know its a dual core 2.4ghz Athlong 64 processor with 2 x 1mb cache. i'm running it at stock speeds and voltages. after all, it IS a $630 CPU

edit: i'm not trying to brag and make other people jealous

You should be able to, however i think you'll need to set the core affinities. As DVD shrink is SMP capable so it'll try to eat up as much CPU power as you let it. You may/will run into issues with HD writing and load times etc. Depends on your HD layout.

PS: I'd edit your post so it looks a little less like a "i have a 4800X2 and you're jealous" post ;) (That i am slightly jealous is irrelevant).

Should handle that just fine, mine does. No need to set affinities, usualy makes the game the higher priority task since it's in the foreground, and give the rest of the available CPU to DVD decoding.

I'm jealous because I will upgrade from 3500+ to 4800+ for my video rig in the near future.....

ok i have 3 hdds, one for games and progs, one for encoding and one for windows (that helps multitasking)

Now i can dual prime95, encode a full dvd, watch tv though VIVO, and play a game at the same time with almost zero lag, sure u should be able to do what u need with ur dually.

hehe why i need to pay twise more for a 4800+ when my 3800+ does 2.7ghz hehe.... ok i'm finished now :p.

what does 3 hdd's have to do with gaming and ripping dvd at the same time?

if you're trying to brag about your 3800 that u paid $300 for doing 2.7ghz, i'm sure if i wanted to mine can oc to 3ghz and i got my cpu and gpu for free. i win bragging rights. so i think u paid 300x times what i paid for mine?

ok back to OP, would setting the affinity to 0,1 make my dvd ripping and gaming smoother?

no windows manages the CPU's fine itself, setting affinity would probably slow one down without speeding the other up. He does have a valid point about the hard drives as well. If you are running mulitple I/O intensive tasks at once, you can benifit by having them running on seperate drives.

Well if you're ripping a DVD then it'll be reading data from the DVD and writing it to the hard drive, if you're transcoding it once it's been ripped then it's going to be reading it from the hard drive and writing to the hard drive. Either way the HD is going to be working rather hard.

If you fire up a game then it's going to need to read/write to the HD too, at a different location in all likelyhood to your DVD's location. All in all it's going to make your HD even more of a bottleneck than it is normally so either the DVD ripping program is going to slow down in the background, or the game is going to grind to a halt every time you need something off the HD.

I don't have a clue if the affinities will result in any difference to be honest.

Dude dont be so hostile, made a little rant about how i paid less for a cpu and got more performance out of it and he get all defencive when i was not even attacking him, also noticed this :p at the end of my post? Anyways SOMEONE still had to pay for it.

And yes having multiple hdds will have a great effect on how well u can do the 2 at once, what could happen is that u can be HDD limited, what this means is the hDD cant provide enough data to keep ur encoding and games working at best speed.

Windows can manage running the 2 tasks simultaneously without affinity settings, BUT for somethings it will seriously not work properly, in those cases u need to set affinity (each task for each core, or one task to one core while the other can use both, i think the second option will result in better performance). I think generally u would not need to do that. Affinity settings will not have an effect if ur I/O limited.

I think the only time ive seen when setting affinity helped was during burning of dvds and scanning programs, seriously i cant remember though.

Hard drives can only read/write so quickly. One hard drive assigned to gaming and one to ripping will perform faster than one assigned to both gaming and ripping. Read/write times.

maybe i'm confused but i'm not quite sure how a second video card will help with ripping dvd's...

you don't need a second video card... most of the video card power or gpu power will be used for rendering pixels and shaders for the game... while the encoding of the dvd should be mostly related to the cpu power...

so what's the benefit of having a second video card for dvd ripping AND playing games at the same time? i'm not sure... i don't think there is a benefit... but maybe i'm wrong.

separate hdds for different tasks FTW

edit:

it should be noted that having hdds and other i/o devices (like dvd burners) on separate channels are suited best

for example (in my case):

SATA 0 - Main HDD
Primary Master: Storage HDD
Secondary Master: DVDRW
IDE->USB 2.0 Adapter -> DVDRW

having burning, d/ling, and playing games really made a complimentary difference when paired with my X2

yeah i;d like to know how a 2nd vid card helps. unless you have something like a x1xxx card that can encode as well.
