From what i've read up on them, If your not going to Overclock get an X2
If you are going to Overclock get an Opteron

But thats just from reading on this site, but it seems as soon as someone ask what processor to get between say like a 3800+ or a 4200+ they just say Opteron for some reason

But yeah, i decided to get the 4200+ myself

get the X2 3800+ for sure!!!

I'm able to overclock mine better than most 4200+. Can get it to 2500mhz at stock voltage and 2600mhz at 1.385. Still increasing the overclock too.

I bought the X2 3800, can't say I've been following the Opteron scene to know where they stand, with all the different core name versions.
Yep me too, if you're not going to OC then go X2 is what they say, or go Opteron to OC the chip.

Opteron or X2? Basically just get whichever is cheapest. They both overclock well. Price is the deciding factor more or less now.

Lets do a little comparison of opterons versus A64's.

Opteron 165 = $336, 1.8GHz, 2MB Cache

A64 3800+ = $321, 2.0GHz, 1MB Cache

So far they are about equal, the cache in the opteron is made up for by the clock speed of the A64. Now overclock them to the same speed, something easy, say 2.2GHz.

Opteron 165 = 2.2GHz, 2MB Cache

A64 3800+ = 2.2GHz, 1MB Cache

Now the opteron has the lead because of the cache, now overclock them to the highest speed on air. (I'm getting the results from AT CPU and Overclocking forum)

Opteron 165 = (quoted from Opteron Results Thread)

RichUK | CCBWE 0534SPMW | 2800 | 1.62 | 44C/63C (idle/load) | TR XP90 | MSI Neo2 Plat | 2 x 512 OCZ Plat r2 PC3200 | 2.5-4-3-7 5:6 | No SS

He's a bit toasty, but do you think a A64 could get to 2800MHz?

yes, plenty have. look at some of the older threads at xs before the optys came around. heck, i could do 2900 on y 3800x2 but i like my volts and temps low.

someone above hit the nail on the head. get whichever you can get the best deal on. a friend here just got a 3800 x2 for 240 iirc.

sorry to hijack the thread, has improvements been seen with the use of dual cores, currently using 3500+, will it help in video encoding if get a dual core? thanks

It depends on the software or codecs your using. I use Dvd Rebuilder with CCE for encoding (which supports dual core) and my encoding times have reduced big time. I upgraded from a 3400 newcastle.

dvd shrink actually utilizes both cores? hrmm... might have to start looking.. altho, I'm contemplating on starting up my dvd->xvid conversion again. divx just announced dual core support.. dunno how much boost xvid gets..
