amd x2 4200 vs. amd x2 3800

i know amd x2 4200 is faster than x2 3800.

x2 4200 - 155 and x2 3800 - 130.

which one is price for performance?

Stock or overclock?

At stock, for gaming I'd get the 4200+ since the 3800+ is a little slow to fully use a high end graphics card.

How about a large bucket of salt? A P4 3.2E is 95% as fast as an A64 4000? Yeah, in Intel's/Tom's dreams.

Where are you finding those X2 at that price? I thougt X2 3800+ was ~$150

At those prices the 3800+ is 15.38 cents a MHz and the 4200+ is 14.19 cents per MHz, so at stock the 4200+ looks a better deal. However, for games you probably wont notice enough difference between the two to spend the extra. Also for overclocking, they'll probably max out at a similar speed so again, 3800+ is a better buy. Having said that, I went for the 4200+ for the higher multipier so I can overclock without memory dividers on my DDR500. Depends what your overall objective is.

I'm not sure if the same thing applies to dual core chips, but I had two friends who got 3200+ single core chips last year and neither have had much success getting overclocks >2.5 GHz. I got a 3500+ AM2 recently and with the 11X multi I can do a 2.66 GHz clock without even hitting the 250 HTT that they need just to do 2.5 GHz. In this way the 11X multi on the 4200+ might help in terms of overclocking with less stress on parts (from higher HTT speeds).

I'm between a 3800+ for $150 and a 4200+ for $183 at Newegg. Where do you get those prices, OP?

I don't know where you read that, but I can only assume it means removing the heat spreader. Alot of extreme overclockers do this.
