Just curious what kind of temperatures your 4200 is running at- mine currently is at 49 degrees celcius (which seems kinda hot to me...) I've only checked it a few times before, but I can't remember what temp it was. Thanks

I have Athlon 64 X2 4200+ and at idle it runs at 34C. Even with 2 instances of Super Pi running, the peak is about 42 - 43 C.

IMHO 49C idle is on the hot side. However temp readings will vary by mainboard, and the ambient temp in your room. Right now the temp in my office is 21.1C and my x2 3800+ @ 2.7GHz 1.52v is 31C as I type this reply. I use an XP-90 w/ Vantec Stealth 92mm fan + AS5. I'd recommend that you remove your current HSF, clean off the old grease with Goof Off or some brake cleaner, then apply a thin layer of thermal grease. If nothing changed you may want to invest in a better HSF, thermal compound, and possibly increase the air flow in your case.

Thanks for the advice. I will see if I can find something to take the temperature of my room, maybe that's the problem. I wasn't the one who originally install the CPU on the mobo when it was bought, so I'm not sure what the HS + thermal grease situation is like- maybe I'll have to take a look at that. Would you recommend replacing the stock HS that comes with the 4200?

Thanks. Just wondering- how hot can it get before I should be really concerned? Right now its running at 50 celcius because it's kinda hot in my room right now due to the sun beating in the window. I'm starting to worry about it overheating :disgust:

Even when it was summertime and 27C (81F) in my room I was still under 40C idle and around 50C full load. You're probably above 60C under load and that's starting to get a little too hot for an A64 IMHO, but anything under 65C full load is fine. $25 is a small price to pay for one of the best coolers on the market, and there is no doubt that you'll see a drastic reduction in your core temps. However before you purchase the new hsf you should clean and reapply a small amount of quality thermal grease in the center of your cpu (see pic above) then reseat your current hsf.
