I have an AMD X2 4200+ on the way. I want to get extra cooling instead of using the stock fan & heatsink. I might overclock, but probably not by a lot. What do you all recommend?

Thermalright xp-90 for light to moderate overclcoking is nice. With a panaflo medium speed fan.
OR
Thermalright SI-120 or XP-120 for moderate to heavy overclocking. WIth a panaflo low speed fan.

If you are going to overclock just a little, the stock HSF is surprisingly good. It's a heatpipe design with a... 60mm I think, fan.

I can actualy recomend to stick with the stock cooler, it's actualy pretty darn good. I am using the stock cooler, I'm at 2.618ghz with my 4200+, 51c max load, and it's fairly quiet as well..

Overkill for a mild OC, hard to install, and exspensive and heavy. X2's don't need more than a $30 XP90.

But required for my 820D !

Stock is good enough for mild OC. THe 4200+ and above HS/fans are not wimps.

Though the topic clearly states 4200+, for the sake of folks browsing this thread looking for ideas for other CPUs we should reiterate here that the stock HSF for the 4200+ is a different beast from the one that ships with the 3800+.

Start with the stock cooler (my X2-4200 came with the heatpipe model), and see if you can live with the noise. The cooling performance is actually really good for an OEM cooler using stock TIM.

If it is too noisy, or you want serious OC action, look into upgrading.

If you upgrade, suggested coolers are:

-XP-120/XP-90
-SI-120
-Big Typhoon
-Scythe Ninja (with or without fan)

If you go watercooling, don't buy a "basic" kit. Most kits have equivalent performance to the above coolers. See X-Bit labs for some recent cooler reviews.
