Well, if you can, reseat the HSF, check how well the thermal paste was applied, was it evenly spread out ? If you can see part of the CPU's heatspreader, then you didn't apply enough and might cause your temps to be a little to high. If your HSF is concave and/or your CPU is concave, then the contact they make might not be ideal and might also cause higher temps.

But, your temps aren't THAT weird. I had slightly higher temps at 2ghz, and 1.35vcore. Higher Vcore does result in higher temps, but so does a higher clockspeed. I did notice, when putting on the ac74 pro that the previous thermal grease wasn't applied 100% correctly which might explain my slightly high(er) temperatures. The new HSF came with as5 pre applied, so that should be the 'perfect' amount.

If you want to overclock, a fair bit, to let's say 2.6ghz, and need 1.35vcore, you might wanna look into buying a new HSF, if reseatting and/or lapping the HSF/CPU doesn't work.

Well, I'm FINALLY going to try to get myself some AS5 this weekend, and along with an aftermarket cooler if my parents let me.

Should I get a Scythe Katana 2 or a Arctic Cooling Freezer 64 Pro. They are both priced at around $26 CAD. The Scythe seems tempting since it can be used on multiple sockets and is made by Scythe which is a good high-quality manufacture. The Freezer 64 Pro on the other hand is cheaper by $1:p. But, lots of people seem to use this cooler and have been getting great overclocks with it. Anandtech has the Katana 2 in their reviews (or was it the Katana) and it seemed to perform pretty well.

What do you suggest? The Scythe Katana 2 or Arctic Cooling Freezer 64 Pro. Or should I just try sticking some AS5 into the stock AMD cooler first and see how well it performs? Thanks guys.

th amd stock HSF is AVC Z7U7414001 heatpipe cooler for AM2
it is reviewed pretty good definitely try the AS5 first
Scythe Katana 2 is a better choice among the reviews

x2 3800+ toledo socket 939 stock HSF AVC Z7U3301001 SUCKS
some am2 cpu come with standard non-heatpipe cooler which sucks too
maybe its just the opty that get the good heatpipe stock cooler AVC Z7U7414001

Wow, tech. Where do you get these information?

How do I find which HSF model I have? I have a feeling that mine is the non-heatpipe one. Is taking the HSF the only way to check whether mine is the heatpipe cooler one?

I do hope that mine is the heatpipe cooler, otherwise I'll get myself a Katana 2.

Model number is usually printed on the side. If it is a heatpipe, you will see copper tubes coming from the base into the cooling fins. Very obvious.

Q: Do they come only bundled with Opteron 165?
A: So far from what we can tell from user experience these new heatsinks come with Athlon X2 above 3800+ and any Opteron S939 Dual Core Chip.

Wicked heatsink, but I don't think my heatsink is the same as the one in the Opty 165.

I got my AS5 today, and I have an idea of what to do with it, but I got a few questions.

1. Do I put the AS5 on the CPU on the heatsink?

2. I put very little AS5 right? I think it was somewhere around a grain of rice.

3. Since this is my first time installing and uninstalling the heatsink, how difficult is it to remove/install the heatsink?

K, I got most of the stuff figured out. My only concern is whether the lint-free cloth is usuable after it is used to wipe off the thermal material from the CPU and HSF. Alcohol will be used on the cloth as well.

I got the AS5 on my CPU and now my comp is up and running. I will do a follow up on what my temps are before and after AS5 is applied on the CPU. Temps are taken from BIOS or PC Probe.

Before

Idle:32C (BIOS)
Load:50C (Orthos small ftts)

After

Idle: 32C (BIOS)
Load: 48C (Orthos small ftts)

Now I know that AS5 has a break-in period, but shouldn't my temps be a bit lower? I think Apop did a comparison between AS5 and Intel's stock TIM and the temp difference was about 3C before the AS5 was broken in. I might have put on a bit too much AS5, but I am satisfied with the results. I will write another post about the temps by the end of the week. Thanks everyone for all you help.

Edit: Can't write the write up on my temps today because I'll be going to Orlando for two weeks. I'll post the temps when I come back.

Mine almost mimics yours except that my x2 runs @ very mild overclocking or 2.2ghz.
The AC pro 64 is doing a great job keeping the x2 at bay, constantly at 27c idle and high 30c or low 40c at load.

So I'm back from my vacation. Here are the temps.

1 Week after I applied AS5

Idle: 38C (BIOS)
Load: 48C (Orthos small ftts)

Edit: PC Probe gives me 34-38C for the idle temps. Does anyone find it weird that it's lower than what I got from the BIOS?

Time for me to start my overclocking adventure.
