Right now, I am running AMD 64 3000+ with Zalman 7000B AlCu.

This morning around 5AM, i got on a nice deal from Fry's and got myself a AMD 64 3800 x2.

I will putting this into my system tonight. and I was wondering, should I upgrade my fan? or will it be fine?

If I DO upgrade, will xp-90 good? or.. xp-120??

Either the SI-120, the update to the xp-120, the Thermaltake Big Typhoon, or the Zalman CNPS9500 will suit you better than the zalman I'd say. The Typhoon seems to be the current leader of the pack, but all three are fairly close, within a couple of degrees of each other. So depending on your budget, if it will fit(the Typhoon is huge!), and airflow(I've heard the CNPS9500 dosen't work quite as well if you've got poor airflow) take your pick, you can't go wrong with one of those three.

I also bought a x2 3800+ and I was wondering the same thing...

With regards to the cnps9500; is this a good overclocking HS? I thought it was meant to be a quite HS, can it be used for both, and done well?

There are HSF reviews stickied at the top of the page. Read several.

OCers.com has a good P4 conparison chart and list the order of performance and noise.
I know your talking AMD but all of the listed HSs will fit AMD but nothing runs hotter than a P4.

If 30dB will drive you to killing/eating your children or making your ears bleed...Go passive :D

What you select depends on your case and it's air flow. What way do you need to have the breeze blow? Down or toward the rear exhaust fan. Do you want a case filling high rise building in the middle of the plot or something that sets low to the board? Is the rig going to be transported to LAN parties? These thing will/should govern your choice.

I like the best that ThermalRight has to offer. SI-120, XP-120, XP-90C, XP-90.
Jab-Tech.com has the XP-90 retail (comes w/fan) for $32, no tax and realistic shipping. They have the OEM (no fan) for $28. Check the reviews on this light weight aluminum HS, it maybe all you need.

As to the 9500, SPCR did a review of it http://www.silentpcreview.com/article267-page1.html the noise to cooling performance sucks. The Ninja is still number one at SPCR for cooling/noise ratio.

I'm pretty sure the noise to performance doesn't suck, SPCR is just uber anal in taking noise into account. I've heard from other sources (including JEDIYoda from these forums) that the CNPS-9500 is not loud at all... I caught a deal for the 9500 for $50 so I jumped on it, and I'll give my impressions on it once it is installed (December 9th or 10th).

Ninja @ $31, jump on that :D Not literally but figurativly.

OP, there are about ten very good HSFs to choose from. It's a buyer's market at the moment.

allies there is a thread down the page about modding the 9500 to have a 120mm fan :D

I'm going to jump on it.

Should I buy a fan from them or should I buy a specialty fan?

*Taxi Driver*.....You talk'en to me!?

If my rig was going to be transported to LAN Parties i would not consider a tall HS.

My XP-90C sets low on the chip and uses a horizontal fan(to the board face).
The Ninja and 9500 set vertical as does the added fan on a Ninja. Both the Ninja and XP-90C weigh in at near 700g but the Ninja carries more of it's weight high. This causes a torque on the board. Most board manufacturers reccomend a 500g limit. So if you jump on this $31 Ninja be very careful at transport time. Some go as far as removing the HS for transposting the rig.

Read the review at OCers.com for the fan settings they needed to get the results they recorded. I would use a controlled fan because you may OC or the dorm a/c may stop working :D

This is a VG deal on one of the better HSs and no tax at the linked vendor.

Look at the P4 HS conparison chart at overclockers.com. Your answer is there.

Yes the XP-90 aluminum retail w/fan @ $31 will fit your AMD and note it's rating next to the Ninja. Plus look-up how light this XP-90 aluminum is. Never a concern about transposting your comp anywhere with it still on the chip. Now your VGA card may have to be removed but that's NBD.

GalvanizedYankee:

I saw that mod with the 120mm fan on the 9500. It's quite intimidating with that fan on it :) However, I'm not too worried about noise, I live in a dorm and noise is pretty much a non-issue. If it so happens that the 92mm fan on the 9500 is a lot louder than the stock X2 4400+ heatsink (which I really don't think will happen), I may have to take another look at that mod though :)
