I have been out of the loop in processors for a while and now want to upgrade what I have.
Can anyone guide somewhere I can see benchmarks, etc. All opinions welcome. This is a great forum, hope someday I can help someone else,
Raymond

Welcome to the forums.

I suggest you do a search on this subject, as it has been covered many times, and this controversial subject tends to raise the blood pressure of members of this board.

There are plenty of benchmarks on the main site, www.anandtech.com.

Yup, the AT main site has lots of good benchies. And these type of threads do tend to start flame wars:Q

But for us to make any suggestions, you'll have to tell us what you'll use the computer for. Do you have lots of money to spend? Do you like to overclock? What kind of programs to you run? Stuff like that.

Thanks for telling me about the benchmarks.
I am not looking at spending loads of money.
I will be doing some video editing, 3d gamming, email, internet.
I have a celeron 633 right now that I have overclocked.
It would be great to get motherboard/cpu suggestions
thanks,
Raymond

Well im not going to say which one is better ect ... but Im an intel man so I will give you an intel budget rig suggestion:

-Pentium 4 1.8A Retail (heatsink fan included) Processor $168.00
-Abit BG7 i845G Motherboard $120.00
-256MB Samsun PC-2700 DDR333 Memory $83.00

$371.00 And this can oc to 2.4-2.8GHz or even stock is ultra fast. Hope that helps

Yup, that's a good rig. Just make sure its Samsung chips on Samsung PCB and that you get the "CTL" version instead of the "DTL" version. Here's the AMD Budget rig:

Gigabyte 7VRXP REV 2.0 - $103
Athlon XP 1600+ OEM - $67
256MB Samsung PC1700 - $83
SVC GC68 HSF - $6 -or- if you plan on OC'ing and would rather have a slightly higher performance fan, get the Thermalright AX-7 for about $30

$259/280 depending on HS/F. That thing should OC to about 1.8GHz (XP 2200+) and with the very high FSB, will actually perform much higher than a retail 2200+ chip.

Both budget rigs are very good, and which one you should get depends very much on your budget and personal preferences.

Or wait until the end of august/ beginning of september and get a 2.53ghz p4 for about 240-260 bucks...and likely OC that to near 3ghz.....

The 1600+ s cheaper but I can say with experience that amd overclocks, again IMO, are not as given as the likley oc of the 1.8a...I got a 1.8a right here running default vcore and 2.4ghz...That 2.4ghz with 533fsb coupled with pc2700ddr will be just about equal with the 1600+ xp if you are fortunate enough to oc it to 2200+ (let alone at stock vcore)....My 1.8 tops out at 2.61ghz with 387mhz ddr cas 2,6,3,2 and a 580mhz fsb....

You can't go wrong with either IMO...they both do gaming and video editing well...The p4 may excel in apps with SSE2 optimization, otherwsie the more powerful fpu of the athlon keeps a 1.8ghz actual speed cpu up there with a 2.4ghz p4....

I like that View on the situation
"You can't go wrong with either"
perfect.
just choose which one you want and the price/performance/stabilty/etc.. ratio on either side will end up being close enough to where it won't matter
we are talking about two companies or better yet an industry of competition here
it's just a matter of what you would rather do with your pc and what you think a PC should do for you (ie: be 100% stable or perform the best in 3d modeling)
knowledge is the only dictator of your decisions
read some then weigh the strenghts that each side has against your own desires, preferences, and perspectives

have fun

i wont even touch the subject of which is better :D

but personally i would go with an athlonXP (prices include shipping from newegg.com)
-xp1600+ $67 (or spend a little more for a faster cpu)
-ECS K7VTA3-RAID $74 (based on the kt333 chipset, currently the best chipset for AMD, its got onboard LAN, plus onboard RAID controller)
-256mb PC2100 DDR $66 or 512mb PC2100 DDR $130

total cost $207 for a kick butt system, and that includes the cost of shipping :)

Intel's are great, but do cost more.
I would go AMD, and even if you are one of the very rare ones that can't get XP2100++ speed out of your
XP1600+ AGOIA or AROIA (simply by increasing the FSB from 133 to 166MHz), hitting XP2000++ speeds is a given.

As said by others, even though AMD changed their naming to compare better with Intel speeds, they are still on the very low side.
For example, the XP2100 stock (133MHz fsb) runs most apps and games at about the same as the Intel stock 2.4GHz.
Now if you are running an overclocked XP1600+ at 166MHz fsb, then of course that will run much faster than a stock XP2100+.
In the end, it works out that an overclocked XP1600+, ($65 chip), runs about the same as a stock Intel 2.4GHz chip.

CrazySaint is right on the mark.
The SVC CG68 priced at $5.99 does a great job keeping my XP1600+@XP2100++, 1.80 vcore, at under 52c max, severe load.

another thing you might want to consider is the loudness of your system...AMD rigs tends to be a bit louder than Intel rigs due to extra cooling needed, especially for overclocked AMD system...
wait till september 1st...Intel is dropping their prices...and I see AMD can't really drop much further...

PS: I swear if I see another one of this thread, I will go insane...

no where does it say you have to have a loud AMD system :)

there are many hsfs that go a great job of cooling while at the same time are reletivly quiet (this goes for both amd and intel)

Yep, the days of loud fans are long gone.
Now that 80mm has replaced 60mm as fan of choice, noise is nearly non-existent.
The fan on my $6 HSF that cools XP2100++ only puts out 28dBA.
To put it another way, you can not hear CPU fan over the stock motherboard fan, or the stock video card fan.

i am sorry...but i didn't say you have to have it...just my 2 cent...just more of a personal preference depending on how much cooling you need...hahaha..i knew AMD peeps would respond to my comment

Hey I don't want to start a flame war but please state facts....I have a review in front of me that showed that a stock 400fsb 2.4ghz beat the 2200+ in majority of apps and the 533fsb which is the standard for p4s now did beter.....The 2100+ obviosly loses in both those categories....

Please do not skew facts....

More likely would compare to 2.25-2.3ghz p4 with the oc'd speed to 2100+ xp....

1600 is a great deal....if it is as easy as thay all say to get to 2100+....My 130 dollar 1.6a does 2.736ghz with a 684 fsb...wonder what amd xp it would take to beat that considering the 2380+ (oc'd athlon rig in tomshardware review couldn't beat the the 2.4ghz 533fsb)....

No war needed keep the BS in line!!!

Uh--who should respond to your comment? Monkeys?

I went the AMD way to save money (and because I like underdogs). The only thing I dislike is the noise (SVC GC68 with stock fan--Panaflo was too toasty). It's not loud compared to the previous HSF, but still noisier than an P4 system. If I have money to throw away, I'd definitely go Intel!!

Go intel. i went amd recently, wish i woulda spent a few extra dollars for intel. amd is too hot, ie fans needed to cool cpu to loud, ie pain in the ass getting special heatsink fan etc. just my 2 cents

Hey, I just checked the rig in your sig and if you're running that 1900+, there's no reason why you couldn't stick silent HSF on it. I'd recommend GC68 or AX-7 + Panaflo L1A.
