AMD Vs Intel

Ok so is the newcastle version of the 3400+ faster than the 3.4 ghrz Pentium 4 (prescott? Northwood?)? Is the newcastle version of the 3200 faster than the 3.4 ghrz Pentium 4?

A lot of people wants to have the fastest system not because they need it but it's because their egos dictate it or they just have that $$$ burning in their pockets. I've never owned a top tiered system since 1988. It's always the second tiered or whatever tier you call it as long as it offers the best bang for the buck whether it's Intel or AMD. For now, that will be AMD.

For me personally its not always AMD, buy that pretty much sums it all up.

you don't need golden member status. you get the search function automatically even if your a junior member.

Thats just his loving way of saying, THIS HAS BEEN ASKED 100+ Times, however, because you are new you probibly dont know that you could have just searched for it.

Just check Anandtech or Tom's Hardware's recent reviews. Basically at the same price/speed grade an Athlon 64 outperforms a Pentium 4 by up to 20% in games. It's also faster in general computing stuff (ie web browsers, Word, etc.). The Pentium 4 is generally faster in video encoding, but even that depends on the program you use.

Basically unless you mainly encode video with your computer, the Athlon 64 has better bang for the buck. Plus it draws less power and runs cooler, which is a nice bonus.

It should be obvious that this is one of those topics that has no "right" answer. So now lets all start arguing Mac OSX vs Windows XP...
or the long term economic/social impact of OSS 🙂

Ok i'm gonna get the 3200+ (newcastle) I hope this is better than the 3.4 ghrz pentium 4 and maybe hopefully the 3.6 ghrz pentium 4. Anyway thanks guys.

How can that be better when the 3200+ is only 2.2 ghz and the pentium 4 is 3.6 ghz? I'm not trying to start any kind of flame war, I just don't understand how it is possible. Anyone care to explain it?
