AMD vs. Intel

Im building a new system. Just curious to know some opinions about which boards perform better in general. I am a personal fan of AMD, however, I think it is good to keep an open mind.

Depends on what your budget is and what you want to do...


Athlon XP-Mobile is best bang for your buck as it overclock VERY well and can be had cheap.

P4 (Northwood) 1encoding and 2nd at gaming

Athlon 64 1 gaming and 2ns at encoding



I had a P4 setup and got rid of it for a Athlon 64 system. But if doing a little of everything and wanting to save some cash get a AthlonXP-M with a nForce2 (or at leats a KT600 board)

Let me clarify a bit.

Not really interested in OC'ing. Don't want 64 bit as its to pricy. was thinkin along the lines of an 800 mhz FSB board.

Unless you are going to use a worthless POS Celeron then 64bit is no more pricey than P4 😉

This is just my opinion but I'd get a true Intel chipset for P4. My next choice would be SiS, Via a distant turd..I mean 3rd 😉

Ive decided to go for a low budget PC, but not lacking power. I want to go approximately P4 2.8 ghz @ 533 mhz FSB.

Need to find cheapest way to accomplish this. Looking around newegg and tigerdirect right now.

I don't think you can compare Intel and AMD "boards." There are several different chipsets for each company's CPU's.

??? I don't think there has EVER been a P4 400mhz FSB at 2.8Ghz. And if you are talking about a celeron then you are REALLY wasting your money.

Best bang for your buck will be a Athlon XP and nForce2 setup, period.

P4 and Athlon64 are pretty much the same price now.

I'd say get an Athlon XP 2500, and a Soltek 75FRN2-L. These two would run about $200cdn (not sure how cheap the parts are in the US of A though, add 1 512 stick of ram, an 80 or 120 gig hdd, and a Radeon 9600 and voila, quite a descent system for very little money.

I have an Asus A7N8X Retail with a Retail AMD XP2800+. Runs fast enough for me.

Helps to have a case with good air circulation. I like the Asus SLK3700BQE, with a nice 120mm Fan.

Sorry, I meant 533 mhz FSB. But Athlon 64 is looking promising.

You would do well with either P4 or AMD64, if you go P4 I recommend the 800fsb P4c with HT.

Well then look at it this way....


P4 with 533Mhz FSB =compare to= Athlon XP

P4 with HT and 800Mhz FSB =compare to= Athlon64



BUT if you get a Athlon XP-Mobile 2400+ then you could juts switch the FSB from 266 to 333 and be higher then a 533mhz P4 but cheaper then a 800Mhz P4.
