AMD vs Intel For Flight Sim Applications

Hi everyone, I am new to the forum so please bare with me. I run a flying club at our local airport and the members want to upgrade our system to something faster.
I do not want this to turn into the usual AMD vs INTEL discussion. I know they both do the job. I would like to know if there is an advantage in either AMD or INTEL when running flight sim applications. The members say they are willing to split the cost of the upgrade between themselves. We are just unclear which way to go. We are open for any advice or suggestions also on M/B purchases also. We already have the basic parts including a Radeon 9700 pro video card. We are looking for cpu, mb and memory.
All this system will run is commercial flight sims and we want to spend the money to run them as fast as we can with what is avialable to buy at the moment. We do not want to wait till spring or summer to make the purchase. Thanks for all your help, Dusty😕

Thanks Blain, that was really a complete run down on just about everything to do with flight sims. Do you think that the article still applies today with newer technology or has Intel increased there lead? What is your opinion about going the RDram route? Thanks, Dusty

With a R9700 Pro and an upper-end system, don't forget to budget for a good, name-brand power supply. I'm partial to the Antec TruePower 430 and you can get one for $66 shipped from Amazon at the moment if you get the AMEX discount code from the fat wallet dot com forums (works with VISA and MC too).

Most of the chit-chat you'll find here will be singing the praises of DDR. This Rambus article is Pre-PC1066 and a little dated. But the first item "The Boss" (a.k.a. Anand Lal Shimpi) said was...
"More memory bandwidth is necessary in order for the systems of tomorrow to be able to perform at their full potential."

That being said... if you seek top performance, go with an 850E based motherboard. 😉

Best performance is still usually seen in the RDRAM platforms, and the prices are no longer that extraordinary compared to DDR. If you have the money and want top performance on an Intel system, go RDRAM. Agreed 😀
