I am about to purchase a t'bird 1.3 ghz on an Asus A7M266 mb.
My question is about the palamino chip soon to arrive - will I be able to use the Asus mb and simply upgrade the chip in the ( not so near ) future or will moving to (say ) a 2ghz chip also require a new mb?
If the answer is bad news and the new chip is not compatible with existing mb's, what is the timing on the new chip and maybe I'll wait.

Cheers

it should be compatible but you will probably have to do a bios update at that time...

The truth of the matter is this: buy a cpu/motherboard that suits your needs now and forget about upgrading.

I know this is opening a can of worms, but hear me out.

When I buy a cpu/motherboard, I want it to last at least 12 months for my gaming and general purpose needs. Last year it was a 1Ghz AMD, using PC133 ram. Before that, it was an 700Mhz Athlon with PC100 ram.

Now, it'll be a 1.33AMD with DDR ram. See the picture? I'm constantly changing things a year a time with hardware. Not everyone will change their box a year at a time, but it certainly comes close.

Say you buy your box today and want to upgrade it in 18 months. The ram is out of date and the cpu you really *want* to buy doesn't fit into the existing motherboard. So all that hard work you spent in trying to buy upgradeable parts is pretty flushed down the toilet.

If you plan on upgrading in 6 months, then it's different. But with 12+ months down the pipe, upgrading is definitely less of a concern.

I totally agree with vash. But, unless you aren't a hardware/computer guru and you don't care about all these new doodad's, then maybe you will upgrade JUST your CPU.

And expecially this time now, there are so many different combinations and motherboard chipsets. You really don't have a good upgrade path.
