AMD upcoming Thoroughbred CPU question

SP33Demon

Lifer
I know this may be a stupid question, but anyone know if the Thoroughbred will be compatible with the KT333 chipset? Or will the new .13 manufacturing process mean more pins, which means you'll have to upgrade your mobo/chipset? Also, how much of a performance increase are they talking for this chip over the existing XP 2100+? Thanks!

From what I understand, the only difference between the Thoroughbred and Palomino cores is the size of the manufacturing process. Therefore, it should be compatible with any chipset that supports AthlonXP chips. Of course, it may require a BIOS update to get the mobo to recognize the new processor.

I believe it is akin to Intel's change of the P2, when it went from the earlier .35um Klamath core to the later .25um Deschutes core.

ECS are claiming (or at least WERE) that their K7S5a latest BIOS is T-Bred compatible seconding the point that there is little physical difference bar manufacturing process between T-Bred and XP.

It will be compatible. The only difference would be voltage, and a BIOS update would fix that.

And next time do a search before you post. This question has been asked a million times.

I wonder if the Thoroughbreds will work in any KT133a boards? It seems some were stable with the Athlon 2100Xp but I don't know about the voltage requirements...anybody have a better guess? I was thinking of getting a MSI Turbo2.

If not I'm sure you could find a good price on a kt266a board and get some DDR.
