Why having northbridge integrated into A64s doesn't mean Turion will be better than Centrinos in power consumption: http://66.102.7.104/search?q=cache:j5v0...000535+chipset+power+consumption&hl=en

in short: P4 chipsets have the lowest power consumption.

Now imagine the chipsets used in the Centrinos.

865G/P power consumption: http://www.intel.com/design/chipsets/designex/252519.htm

12.9W TDP for Dual DDR400 with integrated graphics 11.3W with discrete graphics which is in line with 10W measured at the link at Aceshardware.

http://www.intel.com/design/chipsets/datashts/252615.htm

Intel 855GME with integrated graphics consume less than 4.3W.

For comparison, chipset used in the Sonoma platform: http://www.intel.com/design/mobile/datashts/305264.htm

Intel 915GM 6.0W
Intel 915PM 5.5W
Intel 915GMS 4.8W

Desktop versions of above: http://www.intel.com/design/chipsets/designex/301469.htm

16.3W

Remember that 845 chipsets are 0.18 micron, 865/875 at 0.13 micron(Link: http://www.anandtech.com/showdoc.aspx?i=1811&p=3), 915/925 chipsets are likely 0.13 micron.

You are entirely correct that Centrino will have better power usage. Intel chipsets were designed to minimize power consumption specifically for the Pentium M. In Turion's case, most manufacturers are just going to tweak existing Mobile Athlon 64 chipsets to work better w/Turion and leave it at that. The question will come down to (A) how much less power does the CPU alone use and (B) how much of a better price will it be? The Asus S5000 or whatever it is (really tired, can't remember) had a 60GB drive, 15.4" screen, DVDRW, and 1.6GHz Turion for $1099. Not too many Centrino notebooks can offer that

But again, only time will tell

64 bit? mobile and decent battery life? significantly cheaper than similarly configured intel machines? i guess intel has a good marketing department though...

that's intel's big thing, the marketing department. now i think Centrino is an awesome mobile technology (my laptop is a Centrino 😉) but I think AMD has a chance to get back some of the mobile market w/Turion. Some mind you, but not all

I hope Costco chooses to carry the Acer model 🙂 The only thing that will stop me is if they choose to charge through the nose for it.

I doubt any manufacturer will charge through the nose for Turion. The biggest thing Turion has going for it vs Centrino is the cost factor, hopefully no OEM's or Reseller's will try to ruin that.

All I want is a good GPU paired with it, I will probably upgrade the RAM and the HD to the best that fits my budget 🙂 So far, only Acer has confirmed a good GPU.

And the wait is not helping it either 🙁

I know most companies have their Turion laptops already in production. I can't understand why they dont just tell us whats in the pipeline 🙁 The not knowing part suck 🙁

That it does. Its not hard to figure out what specs they will give us, I'm just looking forward to getting the power consumption/batt life on one 😀

I'm interested to see what Asus and HP have to offer. HP always tends to provide some excellent bang for the buck models and Asus is really growing lately w/their notebooks. Excitement!

HPs Turion solution might be a modified ZV6000 which would pair it with the integrated X200M video chipset. Some reviews on it peg it below the X300 🙁

IIRC, the 200M's use basically an integrated version of the X300, making it less powerful than the X300.
But the 200M is still a great chipset and the zv6000 would work, but keep in mind that chassis is really more of a DTR. Hopefully HP will come out with a Thin&Light model also 🙂

I hope so too, the ZV6000 I ordered from Costco's deal is gonna get returned fast when the Turion model comes out 😉

OMGDOH!!!!!!!!!!!!!! THX!!!!

edit I think something got messed up on AT's side, 'cuz my other link was messed up too and I hadn't changed either in a while

I am still gonna hope for a cheap combo with the x700 GPU. I'll take that over the i6000 any day of the week.

If its the right price, I completely agree. Acer has one coming out for $1199 w/60GB & DVDRW, but integrated graphics unfortunately 🙁

Dang it, that makes my incoming zv6000 look like a killer rig 🙁 I need a thin and light semi-gaming laptop! AMD are you listening?
