AMD Turion? Anybody know about this?

Is that a joke or do you have a link?

it was in another thread about a week or two ago... HP I think was selling laptops that they claimed had an Athlon Xp Mobile in it, but when someone ran CPU-Z it came up as an Athlon 64.... it was a Sempron 3100+, a crippled 64 with half the cache, no NX bit and no 64-bit ability.... hence the mystery chip.

In this link, cnet says

Unlike many chips, such as Intel's Celeron or AMD's Sempron, Turion does not derive from a perusal of a Latin dictionary. The brand name connotes "tour," he said. However, "turion" also refers to vegetative dormant organs produced by perennial aquatic plants.

I on the other hand came up with my own explanation on this name. If you take Centrino and smash it together with Turion, you get Centurion, a Roman officer in charge of 100 men.

Now, I don't know what this has to do with their new laptop processors, but I know that Centurion was a decent Genesis game 🙂

That and it makes more sense than "vegetative dormant organs." 😕

Yeah AMD has a nack for that sort of naming shenanagins... Pentium + Athlon = Pentathlon (or is it pentathalon) oh well I just remember that being the buzz back in the Pluto core days.

It is supposed to be the Pentium M killer. Turion is not there to replace mobile athlon 64s. It takes on the market of the ultra light notebooks. Just like the Pentium M does now. It is not a desktop replacement part, and it does have full 64 bit functionality, so it is not a sempron of any form.

A64 90nm rev E is already a PentiumM killer. Wait till they get into notebooks. Power consumption is about the same and performance is a little better.

Rev E isn't out and AMD would need to cut power consumption by 50% to match the Pentium-M's performance/watt.

It may not be out ( not sure) but that doesnt mean it wont work be a pentium M killer, I dont think it will be, but it will be close. Besides, since when did we measure chips solely on power consumption and not performance ?

In that case prescott is a total failure and and Athlon's are doing ok but the winnar is Pentium M
