This article states the GPU thats coming with trinity is GCN based. Seems a little far fetched to me.

Also. They managed to get 4 piledriver cores at 3.8Ghz and a 384SP GPU all within a 100W package. It's still on 32nm I believe.

It doesn't. This doesn't say anything about Trinity using the new GCN. In fact, I'm fairly certain Trinity uses VLIW4, much like the VLIW5 in 6770/6750. Just because it's got a new number doesn't mean they're all the same 😛 GCN is strictly an upper-tier AMD discrete graphics architecture. The rest of the 7xxx lineup is VLIW4 and die-shrink to 28nm, if we ever see them. We won't see GCN on APUs until 2013/2014.

That seems wrong, or rather it's certainly wrong because AMD's own slides say the third-gen APUs will feature HSA/GCN and Trinity is 2nd gen.

It's certainly VLIW4. Also, Tom's isn't exactly the most thorough when it comes to journalism. That site's credibility has taken a nosedive with regards to the quality of some of their articles. I'd take what's posted there with a grain of salt

Ok, I see.

But then what cards will trinity crossfire with? The 7600 cards are rebranded 6600 chips and those are based on VLIW5 and the 7700 and above are GCN based. So will they remove hybrid crossfire?

Their first attempt at crossfire with APUs+discrete cards was disappointing to say the least. I expected quite a bit more. Even with driver maturity it's still been piss-poor. That said, I don't believe they'll just dump the feature. It'll likely still be able to crossfire, but how and what cards, I'm not sure.

It does seem like other sites are stating it is GCN but the AMD slides don't have any mention of it. I'd be extremely skeptical, considering that I haven't seen it posted here nor did AMD make any mention of it on the financial analyst day.

I just noticed on the Kaveri slide they posted HSA and GCN separately, so it wouldn't make much sense to hide the inclusion of one, GCN, and go without the other, HSA. Unless AMD states it's GCN then don't assume it is.

Hmmm, if Trinity is GCN then AMD has had these going on for quite a long time for that to happen. Integrating a CPU with a gpu isn't a simple 6-12 month task. Especially for GF. I would be quite surprised if AMD was that far ahead with Trinity. Not impossible I guess, but not quite probable.....

With Trinity being the 32nm oddity in comparison to the 28nm pedigree that is GCN, it would be a lot of effort on AMD's part to implement GCN in 32nm SOI.
