"..The job cuts will affect slightly less than 500 employees, an AMD spokesman said. The company said it expects to record about $42 million in charges because of the moves and save about $58 million in expenses in 2016.

AMD, based in Sunnyvale, Calif.."

RIP AMD, I feel that the 5% is the CPU division. Well.. That means that they won't make it after all... Hopefully, they can sell the GPU division and.save themselves.

Laying off 500 people means saving $56M? WTF?

I bet that they are the top people :V, leaving the bussiness headless...

The death of AMD is so fast that every month they are losing practically everything... I feel that It's time for Apple to get AMD GPU división.

It only 'saves' about $12 million - reduces expenses, aka salary/benefits, by $56 million, but have to pay $42 million in layoff charges to them. So basically those employees get to take a year paid vacation if they want to while finding their next job.

Why? Apple's GPU performance on their A-series of SoCs are world class compared to other mobile SoCs. Qualcomm doesn't need them. Mediatek is relying on IT's PowerVR series like Apple. Ditto Samsung. And so on.

AMD is now a bargain to be had. The problem is that their CPUs are uncompetitive and nobody is going to buy their GPU division, even if it is world class. The GPU desktop market is going down.

I still think AMD will survive but this is mainly for political reasons. The Chinese would be interested in buying AMD for neural networks, deep learning etc. And the USG would prevent them from buying AMD just like they will block Micron getting bought.

By the way, this image says it all. Sad, really.

And keep in mind that NV is really just focused on one area, while AMD has to spread their R&D dollars over a much wider field.

Quite amazing that their GPUs are even competitive with NV at this stage and even more so going forward post-Pascal, if they still are.

AMD is anything but a bargain. $2B+ in debt, tied to the terrible WSA, GloFo in general, no real mobile strategy, power consumption issues, etc...

You try too hard in your crusade. Expected=Nothing unusual.

You should be flattered. At least he edit his signature from before. Haha. Made me think he just has various quotes of yours posted all over his desktop. HAHA.

Looks like I won't have to be bitter in 2016 because AMD won't even survive to 2017 if someone doesn't step up to the plate and shore up this sinking ship with a quickness...

Still they depends on Power Vr... So.. If they have somethig better and in home and to make better, it kill off an industry... Why don't do that?

I think they've already tried to save them by giving AMD multiple design wins in their mac pro, iMacs, and MacBooks even when the Nvidia has a superior counterpart within the TDP.

Given the large amount of 'savings' from just a small number of employees tells me they're trimming off fat along with muscle and arteries...
RIP, if only the US gov stepped in sooner and gave Intel the serious smackdown they deserved during the 2000's when AMD chips were superior and Intel was holding a gun to PC maker's heads...

Laying off top people wouldn't save an average of $112k per person. :p

And that number is actually low - that isn't just their salary - it's got to be benefits as well? Wow, people are paid poorly at AMD.

Depends on what kind of people they are laying off. Does not have to be engineers, at least not all of them. For some that salary can be a lot.

Yeah I must have done the math wrong. 112k per employee sounds about right. This is probably a whole department.

Stay classy, making jokes about people who just lost their jobs...
