AMD: The Mad Scientist's Choice For Doomsday Machines (Agents of SHIELD)

I was watching tonight's episode of Agents of SHIELD (S01E12), and in a few quick shots of the doomsday machine of the week I noticed that the machine had a processor in it. Geeky curiosity in full gear, I set out to identify the processor, and ended up having an easy time of it.

The processor in full view. It's large and has an IHS. A GPU perhaps?

But no, that's a socketed processor. So it's a CPU of some kind.

A shot slightly farther down the processor gives us a full frontal with at least some additional quality. We can't read the text, but we can see what appears to be text on 3 sides, and some kind of image on the 4th side.

Now, who do I know who produces CPUs with an IHS and has a logo on one side? Why AMD of course! No one else puts a QR code on their IHS.

And thus the mystery is solved. Clearly mad scientists favor AMD for their doomsday machines.😛

Hah, now THIS is what makes ATOT worth visiting time and time again. Well played, ViRGE.

Nice catch, ViRGE.

Now, what motherboard was used/cut down for that cpu?

I'm thinking like an MSI 760GM-P23 (FX) AM3+ board.

Look at the cap arrangement by the socket. MSI is about the only mfgr. that uses double-double (quad) caps between the coils (?) next to the socket.
Good catch, Meghan54!

I hadn't even considered the motherboard. Since they mutilated the board, there wasn't anything on it I could identify, especially since any label wasn't in the camera's sight. But that's a very good call with the caps. No one else that I can find has a cap layout similar to that, and indeed that MSI board has the exact same layout as the board used in the show. It may or may not be that specific MSI board (since MSI produces variants using the same basic design), but it's certainly a board from that family.

It's been plenty cold this year.

We don't need another ice storm. 😉
Heh. I just realized the delicious irony in all of this. Given the current CPU climate (where AMD CPUs are broadly more power-hungry/hot than Intel's), they used an AMD CPU to make an ice machine.😛

Just as a slight update, now that the show has been released in 1080p on iTunes, it's possible to better ID the processor. You still can't read the model number, but it's clear enough to make out the bold "AMD FX" text.

So mad scientists are taking over the world with pure CPUs, not APUs.😛

Hey now, we use both. Got a APU for frivolity and a Vishera CPU for cryptomining and weapons of m̶a̶s̶s̶ crass destruction.

And we prefer the term "Highly Motivated Experimenter", not "mad scientist". That's just offensive and hurtful. :colbert:
