AMD T-Bred 2500+ (2.0ghz ?)

I was'nt quite sure . Most Roadmaps only show the 2200 , 2400 type ratings , etc. and never the Ghz rating to go along with it .
Any thoughts on when it will surface for the general public ? (May-July '02 ?)

Yeah, my guess would be the middle of the summer. However, I bet a 1.93GHz 2400+ Athlon will be released before the summer begins...

my guess is that AMD will keep the athlon xp branding when it moves to t-bred, but that a pally core isn't going to hit 2GHz. amd will have the t-bred ready by the time it needs a 2GHz processor so they won't improve the pally core much, even if it could get there

It's hard to forsee what kinda speeds the Thoroughbred will reach. But i think it's a little odd that AMD are talking 1800-1900 mhz (not pr rating). How high did the 0.25 micron Athlon go? was it 800 mhz.. or a gig.. can't remember.. but anyway. The 0.18 XP can do 1733 mhz. That's at 1,73 times higher than what the 0.25 process based athlons could do...

So.. if indeed the T-bred is only a shrunk palomino it should go way higher than to just 1900 mhz! At least 2.5 gig! And 1.73*1.73 would actually be 3 gig even!.. Given that the 0.18-->0.13 micron move is as "big" shrink as the 0.25-->0.18 micron was!

I think AMD really needs to get moving now. A Northwood 1.8 ghz coupled with a good old i850 based mobo with RDRAM (which is now not much more expensive than DDR) is really a killer combo. In Sweden it is only about 100 bucks more than an XP 1900+ and ddr + via kt266 mobo combo.

The average joe will choose the Intel alternative over the AMD one and so will many in the enthusiast market (including myself) cuz the NW is a much better overclocker.

So if the AMD roadmaps are correct 2002 will in my opinion not be a very good for AMD. Especially if DDR won't come down in price again soon.

Another issue for AMD is the 166 mhz fsb. It seems implementing it is hard and that there are more than a few months before we will see mobo's supporting true 166 mhz fsb stably with the correct dividers. And it will take even longer before we see true DDR 333 ram.

So.. in my opinion things look really bad for AMD.. and for team DDR. They need to pull a really big rabbit very soon.

It's really hard to predict. Die shrinkage does not directly correspond to increase in yield. Also, remember that the .25 micron Athlon was the T-Bird and pre-T-Bird while the current AthlonXP's are based on the Palomino core.
