Amd T-bird 200/266 whats the diff?

Im seeing theses 266 t-birds for sale what is the differnce. Is it only for the ddr platforms or what. Havent seen any reviews using them either weather it be the new "a" style mobos or the ddr.

New Athlons runs on 266Mhz FSB instead of 200Mhz FSB. which itself improves the performance quite a lot.

Faster front side bus.

The older TBirds use a 100Mhz DDR (200Mhz effective) FSB, the newer ones use a 133Mhz DDR (266Mhz effective) FSB.

The "266"Mhz FSB TBirds are quite a bit faster at the same clock speed than the "200"Mhz FSB Versions.

But you need a chipset to support it, KT133 doesn't. KT133A does, and any of the DDR-SDRAM chipsets do.

Yours is 100mhz, but you could unlock the chip to make it run at 133mhz.

If you have not unlocked the CPU and messed with the multipler and FSB it will be running at 200Mhz FSB (DDR)

Unless it specifically said it was running at 266mhz fsb when you orderd it, I would assume it wasn't an athlon-c.

The Athlon-C's are definately more expensive also. Not to mention only a few stores have them, most say they are shipping mid-March.

The only difference is FSB, there are 200/100MHz FSB and 266/133MHz FSB T-Birds. The 266/133Mhz FSB T-Birds come in speeds of 1GHz and 1.2GHz currently.

If I unlock the 200/100MHz FSB to make it 266/133MHz FSB what's the difference between the two chip? Is it worthwhile to get the actual 266/133Mhz FSB T-Birds when all I need to do is unlock the older T-Birds?

If it's unlocked then there is no difference except you pay more for the official 266 chip.

I would get a 200 T-Bird and a 266 Mobo and set it to 266..you would get some nice overclocking and a lot more bang-for-your-buck, and potentially could get a much faster chip.

I just purchased a 1.2GIG OEM 266mhz bus CPU from Newegg for $236 before shipping. They had a few in stock, so I snagged one. Should be here by Friday. That's pretty close to what the 1GIG 200mhz was selling for not long ago. I figure I don't want to mess with possible multiplier unlock problems when the 266 bus processor is selling so cheap.

I have the Athlon 'c' which has 266 mhz bus and my friend has the EXACT same system except his is running at 200 mhz fsb mine is much faster. I thought there would be a gain but the difference is actually a little amazing.

So if I had a KT133A board and a regular Athlon (not 'C') then I could set the fsb to 133mhz and the multiplier to the correct one to keep the same clock speed? That is if it's unlocked... but do all of them come unlocked or do I need to do the golden bridges thing (which I DON'T want to do!)?
