I am disappointed in AMD for making this move. I suspect that they will end up going back to the real clock speed, because their sales will be hurt. There is little chance that AMD will go out of bussiness, however, because Intel can not have that happen. If AMD goes out of bussiness, Intel becomes the monopoly.
 
Eh I don't know why they would do that, until the Athlon all the K series were even behind Celeron's and they didn't change the name, what happens when the 2nd gen P4 comes out and they are even or at all close if not faster... what of their stupid name change then?

I don't get why OEMs think they will get sued for the PR speeds. Did they ever get sued for using a Cyrix PR300?
 
On one hand, Joe Customer might look at the new speed rating and take it as MHz, buying the cheaper proc over the PIV. On the other hand, if they see the real speed which I assume will be somewhere on the box if not on the front they might lose alot of faith in AMD.
 
HAHAHAHAHHA. If Intel did this, the entire forum would be errupting in anger. I bet someone would organize a large protest outside Intel headquarters. But AMD does it? People defend them... hahahahhaha ohhhhhhhhhhh christ you guys are great 😀
 
kami is probably right hee hee. But what is AMD to do? The average consumer buys by MHz/price and although AMD still have the price going for them Intel's little scheme could be real trouble for the chip corp. I wonder though if AMD's ratings will still be valid once Intel is done bringing all of the gimmicks and circuits the PIV has to bear. That CPU still has a few tricks under its hat...quite interesting if you ask me...too late to get an Intel though 🙁

I, like other here, have been burned by incompatibilities in the past and it still pains me. More recently I've spoken with others also burned. A 1400 AMD isn't equal to a p4 1.6 ghz if you can't get the damned thing to work.

Didn't cyrix also go with PRs? And look where they are now. No, if AMD wants to remain competitive and not just a cheapy-doo cpu for e-machines they have to get their clock rates up. The public does not give a damn if an AMD mhz is equal to 1.2 Intel MHZ. They have to get their clock rate up, no ifs ands or buts!
 
i think even if intel is able to squeeze every last penny out of amd with its price cutting, someone will come along and gobble up amd and its IP. it won't be over anytime soon.

yes i agree. this might be an ignorant question, but why is AMD not upping their clock speeds? is it a design fault that will not let them, or are they just happy with being 2nd best?
 
I agree with what some people have saying... even though I know my Athlon 1.33GHz spanks quite a few higher end Intel P4's, the general public goes "I can either buy this 2000 MHz machine or this 1400MHz machine, I'll take the 2000" - and I admit, 2-3 years ago, I would have been one of those people.

A design fault? What? Is it a design fault that the Pentium3 can't hit 2Ghz?

No...it's just a different design.

The k7 and p6 were designed with shorter pipelines/longer stages (lower clockspeed but more work/clock). The p6 died out first becuase it's pipeline was even shorter, and it's a much older design.

The p7 is designed with longer pipleines/shorter stages (higher clockspeed but less work/clock).

Yes we all know all this already, the point is, the k7 is designed to do a lot of work/clock, the p7 is not. Intel is counting on the clockspeed to make it more powerful. Fair enough. AMD is using the other approach to get performance.

As we've seen the end result is quite a close race in the workshop, but in the eyes of the consumer the Pnetium4 is faster since it has a bigger number. Hence the new Athlon Model XXXX.
This may bite AMD in the ass since a customer might get an Athlon Model 1600, and then find out it's only a 1400 and feel ripped off. Time will tell.

I think that what AMD needs to do is design a chip that has long pipelines and higher clock speed, because then the customers will think it's as fast (all technical merit of that approach aside).

But doesn't AMD have around 20% of the desktop processor market now?

They are far from the leading position, but they aren't exactly an ant either.
 
I get the feeling that AMD is trying to buy time until they can have their 64bit chip ready to go. I think they're fault here is to block the mhz. I'm all for them pushing the fact that a 1.4ghz cpu is as fast as a p4 1.6ghz (though it's faster than p4 1.6ghz in a lot of apps) but they need to keep listing the mhz. AMD needs to realize consumers aren't so stupid. If they read on the box that a model 1600 amd is a fast a p4 1.6ghz even though it runs at 1400mhz, they're still going to buy the AMD.
AMD needs to look to Nvidia as their role model. When 3dfx was first king, Nvidia was a barely known company. Now 3dfx is gone and Nvidia is #1.
While Intel isn't foolish enough to go bankrupt like 3dfx there is definitley enough room in the market for a company like AMD to survive indefinitley, if not become #1.


 
This has nothing to do with 64 bit, that's a long way off for consumers. Fact is, I prefer AMD but this marketing scheme is misleading.

AMD is right that MHZ don't equal power but Joe Blow doesn't give a crap, he just wants something fast to play solitaire on.
