AMD Sued For Discrimination

Heard a little about this last week...........now it's getting much more publicity..............was just on CNN.........

  • A former top executive at Advanced Micro Devices sued the chip giant Thursday, claiming company founder Jerry Sanders and other leaders humiliated him and forced him out after Sept. 11 because he is an Arab-American.

Walid Maghribi claims Sanders and AMD President Hector Ruiz repeatedly directed ethnic slurs and jokes at him, according to a complaint filed in U.S. District Court in San Jose.

Maghribi, a president of AMD's memory group and a member of the company's executive staff, contends that both Sanders and Ruiz were directly responsible for ruining his career in the months after the attacks. Next week, Ruiz is set to succeed Sanders as the Sunnyvale company's chief executive officer.

AMD officials vigorously denied any allegations of discrimination against Maghribi, who resigned in December from one of the highest-paying positions in the company, earning more than $6 million last year. Calls to Sanders and Ruiz were referred to AMD spokesman John Greenagel.

``The company's position is that it's utterly without merit,'' Greenagel said of Maghribi's claims. ``We'll contest it.''

Among other things, the suit contends that Maghribi's troubles started at a meeting in October with Sanders and a number of other top executives and directors in which the subject of Sept. 11 came up. The suit maintains that Sanders was startled to discover that Maghribi, who is Lebanese-born, was a Muslim, at one point allegedly saying to him, ``You are not an Arab, right?''

Maghribi replied that, in fact, he was Arab and Muslim, and that Lebanon is an Arab country. Sanders allegedly replied: ``No, it is not. You are not an Arab!''

The suit contends that Sanders immediately began to treat Maghribi poorly after the meeting. Within months, the suit contends, Maghribi went from one of AMD's leaders to an outcast and he quit because of the hostile environment.

``I just don't get it,'' Maghribi, who lives in Los Gatos, said in an interview. ``I was with AMD for 16 years. They promoted me five times. I was making a tremendous amount of money. Nothing was ever done to me until that date when we had that meeting.''

Several days after the meeting with Sanders, the suit contends that Sanders withdrew his support for what the complaint describes as the biggest business development deal AMD had going at the time. Maghribi was overseeing the undisclosed deal, which was then effectively scratched, according to the suit.

From there, the suit contends that Maghribi, despite his status as one of AMD's leaders, was given ``absurd'' and ``insulting'' tasks that forced him to quit. The suit also contends that through this time period, Ruiz and others directed ``demeaning'' jokes about Arab nationals to both Maghribi and his wife.

The suit seeks unspecified damages but is rumored to equal over $100,000,000.00 for lost wages and compensation and could cripple several key endeavors internationally for AMD. Maghribi, who has been in the United States since 1969, when he arrived to attend college, said the experience was his first encounter with discrimination at AMD.

``This was the first time that I saw an officer of the company could be treated like a nobody,'' he said.

heh, being lebanese i can attest to a lot of 'friends' and people turning against me (with the jokes and insults) after 9-11.

100 mil is a LOT.. but then again making 6 million a year.. christ man. i'd be glad to step in his shoes :)

He'll win, jurys just love to spank corporations and hand out money to plantiff. With problems such as this Intel doesn't need to try to bury AMD, they are self-destructing :(

There's one part which caught my eye and made me wonder what this will do to AMD as far as PR and upcoming technology..................

<< The suit seeks unspecified damages but is rumored to equal over $100,000,000.00 for lost wages and compensation and could cripple several key endeavors internationally for AMD. >>

Being literally loved for being the "underdog" to Intel for years I'm wondering how this may effect them.............Huge corporations like Intel have this stuff "swept under the rug"..................but if this gets a lot of International attention.:Q Like Red said, and I agree, plus more.............Intel would be smart in a business and PR sense to hire this guy and capitalize on this situation................

That?s bad news for us. I don't agree that guy was discriminated because of his background, but 100 mil? WOW!

I hope this wont hurt AMD in any way.

I would?ve just went to Intel and spill all the secretes. ;) (yeah yeah, I know he can?t do that legally)

That would surprise me ToBeMe as AMD isn't the household name Intel is. I would suspect that this wil probably get settled out of court even if AMD truly didn't discriminate against him so as to prevent just such a potentially disasterous out-come. But if AMD does fight it all the way, I would suspect most coverage of the case would be in the financial news and hurt their stock as opposed to ruining the public's perception of them(since they really don't know who they are) besides, look at the Sh*t Denny's has pulled and despite paying out huge amounts of cash on, hardly blinked. There is even the chance that Americans in general are so biased because of 9/11 that many will be apathetic to a Muslim's plight :(

That's what I'd figure too, but, since it's already making CNN and other media coupled with the quote the AMD rep. gave......

<< ``The company's position is that it's utterly without merit,'' Greenagel said of Maghribi's claims. ``We'll contest it.'' >>

AMD's not "big" here, but, in places like Europe, etc..............I hope for AMD's sake you're right and they settle this thing..............that's basicly my point and what the guy on CNN seemed to be pointing out.............fighting this is what could do them harm.................but that seems to be what they intend to do. Sanders is a "hard nose" type guy and seems to fight for what he believes.................somebody better convince him fighting this would not be in the companies best interest.............

For $6 million, you can make fun of me, call me a beloved patriot and rice chopper, have me dance around naked, and throw pennies at me.

My bad! I didn't realize it was already making the headline news as opposed to just the financial coverage. AMD may be banking on American's sentiments being mostly with them as this is where it would go to trial and as mrCide can attest to, there is a lot of anti-Arab/Muslim behavior here (sorry to hear how ignorant your "friends" are behaving mrCide!) Your point about the European market is an excellent one as well.

Somehow I don't think that a 6 mil employee is likely to have his chain pulled like a 30 k janitor. If you invest the kind of money that AMD did in this individual, and then they parted company, I doubt the reason was as claimed.

Jesus...the guy made 6 million dollars a year. For the sake of argument, say he should get 6 million for the time he's out of work and for severence. That means he gets 94 million dollars for compensation and pain and suffering??? Ugh..unbelievable. Freakin unbelievable.

Why do you doubt it? Clearly he was a big wig, so he was probably in the company of Sanders & Ruiz quite often. I can tell you, it was open season on arabs in the NY, NJ area. I work with quite a few arabs, and from what I've seen from co workers, and because of the stories I've heard from those from the arab comunity that I consider to be friends, I believe it. And I hope he gets every dime he's asking.

So, basically, all of you who are saying if you were paid 6 million a year, you would sacrifice your right to be treated as an individual and have views of you based on your ability and not where you were born/your race? Well, if that's true, more power to you. I guess what they say is true; money is the root of all evil. Me, I'd rather be making $6/hr and have people treat me decently than be making $6mil/year and have to swallow my pride day in and day out.

Nope, they're saying they wouldn't mind getting a few jokes poked at them for $6 million a year.

Exactly! Besides, IMHO the guy who says he's rather be making $6hr. and have total respect than $6mil. a year and take some jabs is either young, or hasn't been in the workforce in many positions...................;) No job is perfect, but I can tell you for sure I could tolerate a lot more in a $6mil job than a $6hr. job..............;)
