AMD stock heatsink

I'm putting together a A64 3000+ into a DFI lanparty and I plan on overclocking at least some. The reviews I read said the stock sink is pretty reliable as far as stock sinks go. There is also thermal paste on the bottom of the heatsink when I got it. Should I stick with that paste or use Artic Silver or something else? If I am to use something else, what's the best way to remove the old paste?

I'm sure temps will improve a little with some AS3 or AS5; if you want to do that, use something like alcohol to remove the old stuff. [[EDIT: It uses Shin-Etsu? I didn't know that--don't change it.]]

Yeah, the temps will definately improve using AS3/4/5, so give that a try before getting a new heatsink and fan. If the temps and overclocking are satisfactory for you then just stick with the stock HS.

I'll use this area to ask a question that I am embarassed about. Last week I popped off my stock HSF and put on a Zalman 7700. Using a LOT of Q-Tips, I removed all the excess paste, I went through at least 10 running it over the processor until I could not find an ounce of gray on the Q-Tip. Then I put on the paste included with the Zalman. Notice the part where I didn't use alcohol to remove the old paste for a clean finish? I didn't have any alcohol, besides the drinking kind, lying around, and the only thing I think I could have found was some fingernail polish remover.

Now, my temps are fine and low, system stable from stock 2.0 to an OC of 2.4 running Prime and MemTest. How bad of a mistake is it that I didn't clean with alcohol? Would fingernail polish remover have worked? If it's running cool should I worry about or had I better get in there quick and clean up my mess?

Exactly, just leave the damn thing alone and use the stock solution unless you're overclocking or need something quieter.

I will end up overclocking it some. I don't know if I'm going to push it too far because I've never done it before.
Even if you're overclocking mildly, the AMD heatsink is good enough.

If you already have some AS5 in your house somewhere, sure use it. But I wouldn't go out to a store to buy some just for this.

alcohol and nail polish remover are the same thing they both clean and evaporate so u dont need to worry about using either alchol or nail polish remover.

Nail polish remover contains oils and fragrances though, and those don't fully evaporate. Pure acetone (the remover part of nail polish remover) would be best along with the highest purity of isopropyl alcohol you can easily get your mitts on (I found 91% but 70% works fine too).

yea i know that but it is mixed in a way that where it evaporates the oil with it
