AMD stock, a good buy?

After everything i've herd here on anandtech and at other sites about Intel having all sorts of problems and AMD slowly gaining on them I would think that AMD stock would be on the rise. In actuality their stock has been almost cut in half since June, it's at 24 and back in June it peaked at 48.5. I am far far away from being a stock broker but I would tend to think that now would be a good time to buy their stock. I would really like to hear what other people think about this before I go off and loose all my money. thanks.

The stock is approaching the historical PE Level of 20/1 which is extremely nice for a stock of this type (22.6 Currently vs Intel's 38.7)...I personally think it's a very attractive stock at these prices and even though there have been several earnings warnings (Intel, apple, etc), I would buy it...(Actually, I did )..

the stock looks down because it split.

i bought the stock march of last year when it was 16/share. i sold it this year at 50 forgetting about the duron and thunderbird. i have since learnt my lesson.

it's been down lately because of what's happening to intel. people are getting scared and dropping out, but let me put it to you this way, if i had some serious money to put into the market, i'd buy amd.

AMD has represented 3 out of 4 of my last stock purchases (adding to my position in Paychex - PAYX - was the other). It's still a speculative investment at this point, but the risk/reward profile for the stock looks fantastic. Simply do not invest any more that you can afford to lose (true of any stock, but especially with a more speculative one). I have to take too many margin calls as it is, i certainly don't want to need to be calling you as well should a turnaround not happen as quickly as we would all like.... best of luck to you...

well.....Last time I posted it was at 24, yesterday it was at 18 and today at 22. Is it back on it's way up for good or is this just a bump and it'll go back down tomorrow? I haven't bought it yet, but i'm thinking tomorrow would be a good time to buy. Any other ideas? thanks

I bought some a while ago and lost some money, but its not such a big deal. Buying AMD stock at this point is speculative only in that you are speculating when the masses will use their Intel blinders and see the reality of the CPU market. I recommend this stock, but in light of what has happened these past quaters, its difficult to guess when positive stuff will start happening again. I guess when good stuff happens to Intel again.

Yep, earnings of over $2.50 a year on a stock that before today was at $18 is just ludicrous. No doubt in the not so distant future people who hold onto for now will get their reward.

AMD is back down again, makes me glad that I didn't buy at $25. Here's something I picked up off of a news article from quicken.com

Intel's release of its Pentium 4 chip running at 1.4- and 1.5-gigahertz speeds gives the chip giant the performance advantage over AMD, which used to hold the No. 1 spot in terms of performance.

Obviously these people don't know what they are talking about, all they know is more gigahertz = faster. Somebody needs to straighten them out.

I really don't know much about the stock market, that's why i'm asking, but when, if at all, would be a good time to buy AMD stock? Thanks

joburnet, most consumers don't know the difference either, and they probably don't really want to know. you are exactly right all they know is more gigahertz = faster. and its probably not going to change anytime soon, thats why intel stays on top
