Could have been a classic value-trap, thinking something was worth more than current market price just because it had previously carried a higher valuation.

AMD is unique in that list though IMO in that of the list only AMD is competing with a monopoly that slits its own throat if it holds AMD's head underwater for too long.

Intel needs AMD to be more like Apple is to Microsoft. Profitable and no real risk of going out of business (anti-trust criers kept at bay) but not large enough to actually pose any sort of threat beyond some snazzy marketing commercials "Hello I'm an AMD, and hello I'm an Intel".

AMD doesn't offer a different product than Intel like Apple does to Microsoft though. How can AMD be the little guy AND be as profitable as Apple?

Answer that correctly and you'll find the essence of the differences between Steve Jobs versus Hector Ruiz, Jerry Sanders, and Dirk Meyers (jury still out on this one).

By creating a market niche where they can dominate? Its hard to compete with a giant on all fronts, so I assume they need to be focused and the things they can do right.

Convince people that Photoshop works better on an AMD even when every benchmark in the entire world says otherwise?

I'm an artist so I only buy AMD products /limp wrist

I like this analogy. If you follow this path of logic, maybe Intel feels AMD had too much "time to breathe" during the A64 days and is punishing them even more?

I really thought AMD was competing well on the laptop sector before C2D, but they have have fallen way behind by not replacing the aging X2 processors in their line. I would definitely buy a low-voltage PhII mobile, along with a decent IGP. Intel's IGPs are pretty bad, and if AMD had a snappy laptop, with good IGP, it would definitely compete. It is almost as if they forgot the laptop market. This is doubly odd since laptops are the largest growth-area of consumer and non-server business computers.

AMD has always been in danger of Bankruptcy. This has been beaten to death forever.

Why does everyone seem to hold this misconception? Even if we grant Intel monopoly status without AMD (which is silly because Intel competes in the server arena with IBM/Sun and in the embedded space with a whole host of companies), a monopoly is not illegal only anti-competitive practices are.

I suppose it's POSSIBLE that the US government will see Intel as a threat to competitiveness in the market if AMD was gone, but the chance of that are virtually nil.

If Jerry Sanders wasn't throwing 10-20 million dollar parties 15 years ago, AMD would be in a very different place.

If Hector didn't overpay for ATI by about $3B, AMD would be in a very different place.

Microsoft = Windows
Apple = Mac OS

Microsoft = Zune
Apple = iPod

Microsoft = Windows Mobile for Smartphones
Apple = iPhone OS

Microsoft = Windows Market Place
Apple = App Store

Seems like their markets have some significant overlap to me.

Too bad they didn't have a commercial like that back in the Netburst days.

Both: "Hello, I'm an AMD. (Gasping) And hello... I'm... an Intel (wipes sweat from brow)"
AMD: "Intel, what are you running on that treadmill for?"
Intel: "Well, AMD, I find that if I run very quickly from place to place, I manage to get more done. I'm training right now so that I can increase my pace for the next processor we release. Don't you need to work on increasing your speed too?"
AMD: "Well, no. You see, I manage to get plenty done by just walking everywhere. When I have to really hustle, a brisk jog tends to get the job done."
Intel: "How is that possible? Everyone knows that I get way more done that you do!"
AMD: "Sure, we get about the same amount done, I just don't have to move as fast. It's all about arctitecture."
Intel: "Oh so you're an architect? What's that field look like these days? I'm thinking I need a change of scenery anyway..."

Both: (Sobbing) "Hello, I'm an AMD (long sigh). And hello, I'm an Intel!"
Intel: "AMD, what's the matter?"
AMD: "Oh, nothing. I'll be ok. I just need some time alone."
Intel: "Agena isn't all that it was hyped up to be, huh?"
AMD: (Angrily) "Don't talk about that! Just leave me alone!"
Intel: "AMD... is that a gun in your hand? Don't do anything crazy now..."
AMD: "..."
Intel: "Look, I'm sorry - I didn't want to bring up a sore subject, I swear. C'mon, there's plenty to be happy about - Phenom isn't so bad after all, it just wasn't quite as good in practice as it was on paper. It happens to the best of us."
AMD: "You know Intel, you're right. I feel a bit better now. Thanks."
Intel: "Yeah, sorry again. So, uh, how's the ATI acquisition treating you?"
AMD: "..."
Intel: "AMD, put the gun down! Let's not be so hasty... I mean, it's not like I said R600 or something... Hey, it's not my fault core 2 isn't working for you... shit, no, I'm not trying to bring up Conroe, I was just talking about... AMD, don't do i-- Oh my God, he shot himself!"
<30 seconds later>
Intel: (On the phone) "Yes, please get here fast! I don't want to be accused of creating a monopoly!"
AMD: (Stirring) "Ow... my head..."
Intel: "AMD, you're alive! Thank God! You must have missed anything vital. (Into the phone) He's alive! I think he's going to be ok."
AMD: (Mumbling) "Restructure... make GPU smaller... don't need to have fastest part... win by being the second best..."
Intel: (Oh the phone again) "Uh... yeah get here fast anyway. He's talking crazy."

That was pretty good :beer:

That last sentence though, AMD couldn't get that part right either, in their attempt to shoot themselves they miss and accidentally hit and kill (take your pick) (a) their most loyal shareholder, (b) the bank that lent them money for ATI purchase, or (c) financial analyst that had sung AMD's praises the quarter they needed funding for ATI purchase...etc etc. Hector left a few corpses, figuratively, in his wake there. Never managed to shoot himself though.

Edited the original, I thought up a different ending. :p

Did you guys read this thing? Toilet Paper...

Article:
"When will AMD actually make money again? The question is becoming more important by the day since it carries over $5 billion in long-term debt.

After losing almost $3 billion from 2007 ? 2008, analysts expect the company to lose more money in 2009 and 2010.

While the shares rallied from their February $2 low, they still appear stuck in a long-term down trend from $40 highs way back in 2006"

1. I don't know about you, but any "analyst" report that talks about ANY company as being "stuck in a long-term down trend from $40 highs way back in 2006" is ridiculous.
I wonder how many companies AREN'T in that trend at the moment...Intel certainly is.

2. They also forget to mention that AMD now has over $2.5 Billion in cash to offset that debt.

3. As to the $3 Billion loss...almost $2 Billion of that was a writedown of Goodwill. In other words, they didn't lose the money, they made note that the money wasn't there in the first place (they had previously overvalued ATI).

Garbage report...

BTW...by "rally from Feb low", he meant to say it's now triple that low (currently $6.xx/share).

That was my impression too, but I didn't want to start the whole "rail against the bastard OP who wasted our time posting crap" cycle so I just tried to stay on-message.

But yeah, angry mob bulletin alert- we'll be forming in the parking lot after work today, bring your pitchforks if they aren't still at the cleaners from last week's team building exercises, we'll give OCguy at least a 10min headstart, he's a Lifer after all, that ought to count for something on the eve of your planned obsolescence. :laugh:

If by yardarm you mean this:

The actual time that the sun would pass a particular yard would depend greatly on the ship's latitude and heading, as well as the height of her masts, but the phrase seems to have originated in the north Atlantic, where, in summer, this would have typically been at about 11 a.m..

This was the time at which, by custom and rule, the first rum "tot" of the day was issued to officers and men (the officers had their tots neat, while the men had theirs diluted with water), hence its connection with taking one's first alcoholic drink of the day.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Y...un_over_the_yardarm.22

Then yeah, me needs me a friggen yardarm rigged in the parking lot. Better put one in the yard at home too, would put all those nasty neighborhood rumors about me being a lush to rest finally. :laugh:
