AMD Socket M2 ?

Hi.

Is there any official information regarding that future Socket version for AMD processors ? Especially, when will it be available ? And am I going to need a completely new Motherboard for it ? (I'd guess so, of course ... but I guess we never know)

I'd like to know what are the advantages of it, since I might be interested to upgrade for it eventually.

A link, or any known information would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Wooops ... realized I should have posted this on the Motherboards board. Oh well. Sorry guys.

Not really. The CPU plugs into the socket; it's close enough in my books. Besides, you'll probably get more responses in here.

I think it's coming pretty far down the line. It will use DDR2 AFAIK, not sure what else it will do. Personally I miss the Socket 7 days where I could reuse my motherboard for years.

At last word, M2 will begin shipping to OEMs in Q1 2006.
That means we should see it on the shelves sometime in Q2...
Yes, you will need a new motherboard for M2, but they will continue the socket 939 chips at the same time...
The only advantage is it will allow for DDR2, and this is a rather dubious advantage until the DDR2 clockspeeds get above 667 MHz in the mainstream (anything less than DDR2 667 MHz will be slower than DDR 400 MHz).

another thing is that it's rumored that AMD will switch to DDR3 a year after DDR2, so upgrading for the future with M2 might not be that much better than with s939.

well lets see. ddr667 is widely availible right now.

True...but it's still about 10-15% more expensive than DDR400. Mainstream is more about cost than availability (though the one is affected by the other).

DDR2 800 should be widely available by april/may 2006

Currently, it's ~double the cost of DDR400...by comparison, DDR500 is ~35% more expensive than DDR400.

You'll get a 65nm shrink eventually, Pacifica and Presidio, a few clock hikes (the DDR2 controller may be significantly better than the DDR1 controllers)... that's about all we know right now.

The shrink should be available in socket 939 as well...Pacifica and Presidio should be as well, though there's been no word on that for sure.
