BTW Just saw this:

The target price of that laptop is under $1000!

That's insane value for a 16/32 Core 40CU Strix Halo (even with "only" 32GB of RAM). Obviously there are cut corners to reach that price point, but essentially you get the same MT and GPU performance you would get from a 36GB 16" Macbook Pro (which goes for $3500).

Considering Framework's ITX motherboard alone with the 8-core AI MAX 385 (8 cores and 32 CUs) costs $800.- I'm not convinced the cheapest model isn't using that CPU instead, but if not, that's insane value!

I'd personally prefer a 14" device with a smaller keyboard (without a numpad) and a better OLED screen even if it cost closer to $1500 (or even $1700+ for 64GB of RAM) but this current one also has its niche.

We'll have to wait for final reviews but as it stands it looks to be the cheapest "AI MAX 395+" (ugh AMD fix the naming next gen!) device by a long shot

How will they sustain their business? What about warranty claims??

Just stick to Framework or HP.

1. 100% china oem similar to tongfang
2. mediocre quality similar to tongfang (build monitor etc)
3. thin profit margins to keep price down
4. basic minimal warranty
5. (speculation: Halo itself may not be as expensive, Framework etc take big cut)


but selling full Halo laptop in the US for less than $1000 is still a big flex


basically if chassis/build etc is decent (it probably is) it will eclipse everything else in midrange, only 5070ti laptops would make sense after Halo

Yeah that's called launching a new product in a new swimlane.
You need to stuff the channel to force enough units into driving per-unit cost down.

If you truly believe that Strix Halo really costs north of $600 per unit from a COGS standpoint, then yes. The absolute cheapest trash bin level laptops with near give away level processors are being sold new at near $300, and this thing is quite a bit better equipped than 99% of those, even if it is bottom of the ring for it's class.

If they can sell a 441.72 mm² die for $999 which is very impressive then Strix Point should be able to reach the $200-$300 price point with the same chassis. But we have never see that with Strix Point so until this launches at price they stated I will take it as a marketing stunt.

That's not how any of that works.

no because oculink allows you to continuously upgrade the GPU as needed, and your not stuck to something soldered on.

Again laptop dGPU are the biggest junk i can ever recommend because they just make the thing much larger, and again pointless, unless its plugged into a dedicated power source, and at that point you might as well have the eGPU.

Also oculink is going to hit PCI-E Gen5 soon, and the higher end gear typically has a 8x oculink and not a 4x one.

Lastly, i still wager in real gaming scenarios my 3090 will smoke a laptop 5070 only because it can draw 400W+ and is not limited to anything, not to mention, the thing has 24GB of GDDR.

So lets not even go there, as i do not even take timespy as real benchmarks because rarely do they ever really meet real game standards.

5070 is huge and weighs minimum 1.3kg... i.e. total weight of an entire ULW laptop itself

5090 is 2kg+

up to 5060 with smaller cooler (2 fans) is still 600g

with extra connector/psu/cables+ etc you got a very non-portable egpu setup 😣

any benefits you may get with 1.5kg laptop + egpu are eclipsed...

just get 2.5kg laptop and you can play everything. lighter and super portable
