There is a lot of good oc info if you read all of this thread. Also really good guide here.

If you just want the shortcut without any work
frequency = 250 assuming your pc3200 can function at 410mhz at 166 setting otherwise about 244
set to htt3 - htt4 at 250 puts you out of spec
1t memory - memory should handle this otherwise at 2t you loose advantage at this level of oc.
memory at 166 - could leave at 200 and see where your memory goes -see guide
voltage at +1.7 % - may or may not have to bump.

If you want to go higher you need clockgen program available here, but you probably want to study more to go there.

I just ordered mine. Strange thing is that the link in the first post doesn't take you to the page for the item any more. I had to search for 'ecs nforce3' to find the combo. Then I had to click on the 'buy' button from the list of search results. I sure hope they don't email me back and say that they are out of them. I would hate to lose out on this one.

FWIW, I had a similar system (XP-M 2500+ & AN-35) @ 215x11 setup as an HTPC. It was slightly underpowered for MCE 2005, but it is running very well on the new 3100+ & ECS NF3 system @ 245 fsb (RAM 166, HT4, 2T)

According to the AMD website, the 3100 Paris with 130nm core runs at 1.4V with a 62W power rating. Therefore, it's probably best to keep Vcore at +3.4% (1.55V). My chip tops out (stable) at 2.44GHz with 1.55Vcore.

The current version of Clockgen does not support auto loading of the FSB at PC boot. Search for CG-NVNF3. This version of Clockgen is 100% compatible with this NF3 board. The next version of Clockgen should remember the FSB setting.

Which would be the better processor to get, the Paris or Palermo? Which overclocks better?

EDIT: Duh, I found the answer. The Palermo, of course.

My MB and chip came and I got the HSF that Zap suggested. However, I got problems. Power to fan and CPU fan work. Power comes on with power button but doesn't shut off. No front leds, no hd leds and no beeps and most importantly no post. I believe (but cant confirm and trust my 3 am thought process) that the jumper was set to clear cmos when i first tried to turn it on. I eventually changed it to normal. I have experience changing video cards and memory so I am aware of grounding myself.

So my question is...Would installing a floppy and a boot cd help? I don't want to have to return it but I may have to. I have never turned on a computer for first time so I am not sure what should happen. I thought it would post and show me some options and bios.

MOUKIE007, you need to follow some general troubleshooting steps such as testing the motherboard outside the case, make sure you plug in the secondary 4 pin 12v plug, etc. Have a PC speaker hooked up (not your multimedia speakers) to hear POST error beeps. Probably post a request for help in the motherboards area.

Thanks, I saw some of your prior posts on the subject. I will look through the suggestions and start from scratch tonight.

Yeah, I just got an email back from them confirming that the combo they are shipping to me today, is indeed a Paris Sempron. Oh well, no 64-bit, but it should still oc like mad.

Got mine today - it's definitely a tray CPU, and the label on the plastic packaging says "Sempron 3100+ 32-bit CPU."

Who runs all 64-bit anyway. Maybe next year I'll make the move. This is a great deal on a 32-bit system.

It definitely is. I'm building a COMPLETELY new system, as my current computer will be used as a file/print server. That means I need a new video card, new HDD, new RAM and a new optical drive. So anywhere I can keep costs down (as with this mobo/proc combo), I'm happy.

I believe all of us have gotten the same Paris CPU that clearly indicates it's a 32-bit model. Just rember, almost all of us have checked the CPU in CPU-Z, and for whatever reason, 64-bit instructions ARE enabled!

Up to the HTT limit of the motherboard BIOS (250MHz) you can use just about anything that claims socket 754 compatibility because these things don't run too hot. If you start cranking it using clockgen and using vcore mods then you may want something better. I've seen cheap HSFs go for $7 and up, plus shipping.

What programs are you guys using to monitor system temps in Windows? I can't find support for this motherboard in MBM5 and Everest no longer makes the freeware version. Any hints and or help would be great.
Thanx
Joe

Speed Fan is also free. It will only report cpu temp accurately, other parameters people report are all over the place. I ran speed fan and everest and both report same temp.
I like speed fan since it can display cpu temp in the task bar and cpu temp is all I care about anyway.

got my paris today. it does not come with heatsink.interesting how they tape the tray plastic to the packing list never seen that before.

paris 3100+
ecs mobo
and i bought a $12 heatsink/fan so i wouldn't be sad and not have one lol.

i also picked up the ECS l4VXa2 S478 motherboard. I had an asus p4s533 going dead on me so i have two selections to choose from.

Not sure if the P4-2.2A northwood @333ddr or the paris 3100+@333ddr will produce the quietest low cost HTPC/NAS (the xbox is the head end).

important to me is the ability to flow 100mbps to xbox off drive (iso/img), low noise for the wireless lan cards (two wifi, dont ask).

Ability to unzip, alchohol mount, torrent/ftp all headless using terminal services.

All while dealing with the warm summer days and vicious power.

It may seem clear cut, but the price point on the P4 S478 is that i already bought it 4 years ago.

Can i return the 3100+ and get another one? I was really hoping for 64bit since i wanted to play with windows 2003 R2 64bit and XP-64. Without having to format my current workstation. Plus 64bit unices.

I'm kinda sad that it is 32bit only. I suppose i can put it in place of my way-old athlon 64 2800 for desktop though.

not bad. poor on packaging. They could have thrown in a warranted retail box for the $$, what does this cpu have 90 days?

CPU comes with 1 yr AMD warranty. The 3100 Paris will support 64 bit. CPUz also confirms MMX, 3DNow, SSE, SSE2, and x86-64 instructions.

Due to some of the hints regarding this MB, I am up and running. I am not sure what the prob was initially, but I eventually ended up with bent pins. Either I was shorted due to the metal on the bottom of the heatsink support and then bent the pins, or they were bent before I did my first test. So I fixed the pins, put some tape over the metal bolts on the back of the support and off we go!!

Congrats, MOUKIE007.

I have a couple of questions before I assemble my new comp when I get it tomorrow.
1) What is the best way to burn in the processor?
2) Should I try and OC it as much as I can, and then burn it in, or should I burn in with stock settings?
3) What are the stock settings?
I think that is all for now. Again, TIA.
