How does this CPU compare to say a Xeon at 2.0Ghz? I am actually running dual 1.6 Xeons overclocked to 2.0. They can actually go up to 3.0 and maybe a bit more, but I was having some heat issues during the summer so I cranked them down a bit. I am just not sure I am using them to thier full potential, and the fans they use are pretty loud. I am considering replacing them, but not totally sure. I know the single sempron won't compete with the dual xeons when it comes to multithreaded apps, which I rarely come across. And I know the dual CPU's will be better with multiple apps open(something I do do quite often, but even then they are not the most demanding programs. Stuff like firefox, mp3 player, word documents, and what not)

So I am just not sure what i want to do, keep the system I got ad wait till dual core becomes a bit cheaper and more software is written for it. Or just go ahead and axe the system now and get something cheap to hold me over for another year or so.

I should also mention I work for a sister company of microcenter, so I get a discount through them. Not ecxactly sure how much though. I am guessing 5%

Very nice deal. :)

If I pass this I know someone is gonna ask me to build them a budget system. If I buy it I can almost guarantee it'll sit unused. lol

I just finished a 939 system last week for myself.

Decisions, decisions.

Yeah... compare the Sempron to the Xeon... but never put that puny Xeon up against the Opteron!! :)

Yeah I actually originally was running dual 146 Opterons, unfortunately I had to sell them when I needed some money. I didn't get the Xeons because they were a powerhosue CPU. I got them cause I was pretty sure they could do 3.0Ghz, and dual 3 Ghz CPU's for 100 bucks is awesome.

Also I am a bit more of an AMD fan, nothing wrong with intel, I jst like the underdog, so I wouldn't mind going back to them. But not if I am gonna see a huge performance hit.

Plus with the extra cash I could go ahead and add another stick of memory. I figure I can probablly get 100 or so for the 2 Xeons plus the heatsinks and fans at least. The board is an ASUS PC-Dl, which I should be able to sellf or 100 at least if not more. So thats 200 compared with the 60 for this cpud and the 110 for the motherboard. So I would be saving 30 bucks. Oops, nevermind, forgot I would need a heatsinkf or this cpu, so actually i would be breaking even, maybe a little in my favor afte rmy discounts and if I could get any more out of my parts.

Damn that is a great price, i have been trying to sell ons for $75.00 used, and that was a pretty good price, considering they are over $100.00 new.

theirs a good bunch of benchmarks against a P4 1.8, and that's only 10%-20% slower than the 2.0 Xeon.

I'd say with 3.0 Xeons their is no use in getting the 3100, with 2.0 Xeons, and if you're gaming with it, get the 3100.

Is there a better board for these then the lanparty NF3 250GB? I know thats one of the best socket 754 boards for overclocking.

Nope (if you want AGP). For PCI-E, your choices are much more limited - I'd say the Abit NV8 is your best bet then. I put my money where my mouth is, I have 2x of them on order :p

The Microcenter website must be designed by the brother-of-the-neighbor-who-lives-next-to-my-father type of webmaster.

I've tried to buy this processor several times, using different browsers, and a couple of credit cards -- including a microcenter preferred customer visa cards.

Each time, the transaction is rejected because the card information is inaccurate. This is beyond ridiculous.

My "local" microcenter is out of stock, so the web is my only resort. Useless.

Hmm.. my local pickup was cancelled because they didnt have any.

If I order it with shipping, it will be $71.00 with tax :(

Now.. I wonder if I should still get it.. or if I should get a64 instead at that price.. hmmm

Different chip architecture. Anything Socket 754/939 will smoke Socket A.

beyond this statement about smoking Socket A, I seem to recall that the sempr0ns above a certain number (I think over +3000 or +3100 and above) have the on die memory controller & that's the real ticket to better performance. I don't think these sempr0ns are 64 bit enabled processors, but I could certainly be wrong on that (don't follow the market after I did my AMD event upgrade). In any event, from what I recall the on-die memory controller is the more important performance feature. somebody please correct me if I misstate

great price & good find OP!

EDIT:
K8 Sempron does not support x86-64 extensions.

While this may seem like a downside at first, this will actually help out AMD. The K8 Sempron, if cache size doesn't hurt performance too much...

The K8 Sempron has the normal advantages that an Athlon 64 would have (except for the x86-64 part). Sempron for Socket 754 has an on-die memory controller, and runs memory at DDR400 speeds, which greatly enhances memory intensive performance over its K7 cousin

ALot has changed. AMD has recently enabled X86-64 on the semprons (new ones). All 754 socket semprons have the ondie memory controllers.

So what motherboards are you guys pairing these with?

And how many plan to use this in your main rig?

Yeah, it is cheap, not sure if it has enough goodies for me to use it as my main computers motherboard. I wish MC had more NF3 MB's to choose from. Oh well, I probablly don't need to be spedning any more money anyways.

To those guys that couldn't get Micro center to take your credit cards:

I tried four or five times then changed cards and was still rejected. After going away and coming back to try again, I was still rejected for billinb address is different then bank address. I then went back and changed my address from just a capital letter at the start of my street and capitalized all the letters in my address and spelled out Avenue completely and it went right in. I guess when I applied for the card I used all capitals but I never had this problem before.. So try and get your address the same as your CC application.
