AMD Sempron 2800+ (boxed) with MB = $109.99

Socket A Sempron 2800+ is like Athlon XP 2400+ with different settings.

http://www.c627627.com/AMD/AthlonXP/

Athlon XP 2500+ is a Barton with twice the cache.

Socket A Sempron 2800+ = 12 x 166 FSB with 256 KB cache
Socket A Barton 2500+ = 11 x 166 FSB but with 512 KB cache

Front Side Bus - speed of communication between the microprocessor and the chipset.
L2 Cache - memory used by processor to store frequently used instructions.

in most benchmarks the sempron 2800 is slightly faster than a barton 2500. however this is a pretty common deal...you might want to wait till friday to see if frys will have anything special for x-mas.

According to a thread on FW, Staples is selling a Compaq PC with the Sempron 2800 tomorrow for $199 AR. Could be $179 or less after the usual coupon deal, nice price if you want a cheap PC. Mobo is supposedly the Asus A7V8X, comp is a Presario SR1200NX, has integrated video but also an 8x AGP slot.

If that's true, then I'll tell him about that instead. Thanks!

Looks like the Staples deal was a regional one for the NE so unless he lives up there he most likely won't get this PC deal.
