That ended in Socket 7 that was a long time ago, and Intel abandoned it early.

It could still happen if AMD were to pay some royalty fee to Intel for using THEIR socket and AFTER it's superseded by a new socket 😀

That lets Intel stay ahead of AMD while AMD tries to give those "poor" Intel users a new, faster CPU with more cores or better IPC. This goes on for a few generations before Intel refuses to let AMD license their socket anymore coz more people find out that running AMD CPUs is just more exciting and fun 😀

GN review TLDW - Max 10% slower, often less and even margin of error low single digits. Better performance per dollar than big bro. It's a great choice for existing owners with older Zen gens. Or if you are buying the board and ram for cheap used and the 5700X3D new.

Steve thinks maxing out with the 5800X3D is still the best way to extend your AM4 lifespan. I don't agree simply because it is highly unlikely you will ever be in a gaming situation where 10% difference, more likely less, is going to get you over the hump from poor experience to good experience. It's one of those looks good on paper, means nothing in reality analysis. Save the money is my advice. Newegg is offering a 16GB kit of 3600 with the 5800X3D for the moment, that helps with its value but it won't last long.

Quantity seems pretty limited, Amazon only has 16 5700X3D left shipped and sold by. That means they barely had enough units to crack the top 20. Newegg wants over $10 shipping on the new 5000 series so they can suck it.

The new 5700 at $175 is a decent choice. None of the more expensive 8 cores make sense anymore with its arrival and there now being a $249 3D here in the U.S.

You also don't have to use a 4090 to experience a difference. I had a 5800X@ 5050MHz boost with 32GB 3600MT/s and RX 7800XT on my 1080p TV. Using ray tracing in games like Gotham Knights and the Spiderman games, there were frame pacing issues in demanding areas that the 5800X3D I replaced it with completely eliminated. There are games where the big cache is unbeatable, where they dust the vanilla Zen 3. You have to keep in mind none of these reviewers are playing the whole game or for hours at a time. Starting in 2018 with Assassins Creed Odyssey my experiences gaming no longer necessarily reflected what reviews conclude. I give GN credit, BG3 is a late game save from a viewer of the channel. They are trying harder to be as thorough as they can be with limited time. Aussie Steve has been doing some in depth testing too. Just not enough as that don't pay the bills.

Looking at the FPS the new 3D turns in, and my experience with the 5800X3D, they will be capable for years to come. Most will be replacing the GPU before a platform upgrade is necessary. It's as always, all about the games you play and the settings you use. 4K gamers are less dependent on the CPU most of the time. Gamers like myself spending the bulk of their time at 1080 feel the difference more.

I agree most do go for the lower end CPUs. The 6 cores are the most popular. Though the 8 cores sell well when they are under $200 the way the 5700X and 5700G are at the moment here in the states, on Amazon. Most of the Cezanne CPUs consistently sell in the top 10, which goes to the point that cache isn't a big concern for the under $200 shoppers. Price and cores matter more judging by the sales positions week in and week out.

Your are a bit off about the $60 between the 3Ds having a big impact on the GPU purchase though. For many DIYers, min max is the most popular meta now. Spend as little as it makes sense to on the system; often 50% or even a little less of the total budget, and the other 50% or so on the GPU.

I meant the other way around:

If you already got a ~$500 graphics card (and an AM4 system on which you want to upgrade the CPU), then a $60 difference between 5700X3D and 5800X3D CPUs most likely won't be a decisive factor to clearly chose the cheaper option.

Look at it the other way. They can whet their appetite with a barely usable NPU on AM4 and promise greener pastures on Zen 5!

Another thing that makes the AM4 platform so great is that 5xx-series boardss, despite not being officially compatible with Zen 1 & 1+, will happily accept and run these processors.

I have this old 2200G that I use as a test CPU for all the motherboards that I come across (either new or second-hand). I've yet to see a 520, 550 or 570 model from Asrock, Asus, MSI or Gigabyte that refuses to run with it. My next test will be with less common brands like Soyo and Jginuye.

I will build at least one AM5 system. But I also think you are right that AM4+Zen 3 has plenty of life left in it. If you ignore bigger bar better and just need a solid gamer, something like a 5600X should get the job done for years to come. After all, 9th gen consoles are the target now. PC CPUs needing to do what Sony's Kraken does, ray/path tracing, and poor optimization will be problems. However, as we have seen with games already, for instance, The last of Us and Starfield, optimization will continue well after release.

I'm going to take the L here. You were right to bash the 5700. It should cost at least $40 less than the 5700G to justify the missing Vega IGP. At $175 it's bad and I feel bad -

I agree with Steve about calling it the GF or something so shoppers know it isn't the usual non X version. Deceptive and anti consumer.

My take is not gonna hold up but it should have been called 4700X. It's a perfect name for this CPU, if we're speaking about performance. Faster than Ryzen 7 3700X, but slower than Ryzen 5 5600

There is already a 4000 series with Zen 2 cores. GF makes sense as DIY/retail shoppers are used to F designating a lack of IGP with Intel CPUs.

GF is the most confusing one to be honest. "So it has graphics, but doesn't have graphics?". It's better to just put any unused letter really, like 5700A/J/R, to signify that it's unique

If you put it in the 4000 series, you now have different generations of cores, different cache sizes, different PCIe specs. VERY confusing.

If you name it the GF or G-F, it's the 5700G with the IGPU missing. Easy to quantify and make it the top hits for search queries.
