I have three AM4 PCs currently. It is not an addiction I could stop at anytime. I think this is the right thread for a question like this.

Server - X570 3700X 64GB DDR4 3200 ECC
My PC - B550 5900X 64GB DDR4 3600 RTX 3080 at 4K 120Hz
Kid PC - B350 1700X 16GB DDR4 3200 (running at 2666 because Zen 1 IMC) RTX 3070 at 3440x1440 144Hz

I want to retire the 5 year old 1700X. I think it is limiting the RTX 3070 in a few games. A 5700X seems like the logical replacement when the B350 gets a BIOS update.

But I could instead put the 5700X in the server and then move the 3700X to replace the 1700X. Wouldn't have to wait for a BIOS update then. Would a 3700X limit a 3070 much at 3440x1440?

Or I could wait for the 5800X3D and shuffle all the configurations. 5900X seems like a good server CPU (more threads for VMs) and 5800X3D would be great for my PC. And it'd only be $150 more.

What would you do in my scenario? Not upgrading is always an option but... not my style.

That's what I would do.

OR

Sell off both 1700X and 3700X and get your kid the 5800X3D too. Now both are happy.

Also, if you get a good deal, you could do something like I did and upgrade one of your machines to a 5950X. These chips are pretty well binned and seem to be available for good deals used and new.

$550-$580 new on ebay right now for 5950x. I got lucky and got my 6th one for $490

That's what I would do.

OR

Sell off both 1700X and 3700X and get your kid the 5800X3D too. Now both are happy.

I thought about it some more. If I can resist the 5800X3D I will wait for Raptor Lake and Zen 4. At that point it'll be clear if I should splurge and replace my 5900X which would be an overkill hand-me-down.

Ryzen 3600X -> 5600x/5700x upgrade: Worth it or no?

Quick summary of system specs:
MSI B550 Tomahawk
Ryzen 5 3600x
GeIL Evo X II 16, 3600 (18-20-20)
MSI RX 6600 XT Gaming x

Primarily gaming and work from home rig.. No kind of transcoding type work, or media is low priority.
Gaming is done at 1440p on my Gigabyte G32QC (high settings.. ultra if older title and can handle it lol)

Seems from the research I've done.. if 1080p gaming.. then the upgrade would be worth it.. and if IPC performance is sought after... 1440p and above.. then the GPU would be more of a factor and the CPU upgrade shows smaller impacts..

If Microcenter is nearby, you can pick it up for $210. Definitely worth the upgrade if you feel like your gaming fps could use a bit more oomph.

Just tried this on my 5600X which I had already done some curve optimizer on and landed on -5 best, -8 second, -13 rest with a PPT of 110, EDC of 125, and TDC of 75. I optimized this after many runs of CBR23 single and multi, and Time Spy runs.

When doing the "Per Core" auto curve optimizer, it spit out -27 for all cores and reset all my PPT/EDC/TDC settings. In CBR23 scores are abysmal, as is the TS CPU score.

So what is this thing... doing? Am I using it wrong?

Honestly I would leave your previous bios settings that you have tuned and tested. I did the same for mine own system, this is kinda of a nice to have in Ryzen master. But as like you did I already tested and tuned from the bios I would run with those for now.

After putting all my power settings back to where they were and doing -20 on top two and -25 else I did end up scoring 1550/11401 in CBR23 with 70Mhz higher all core and lower temps.

That MT score is about a 125 point improvement over what I had. So it did find some interesting curve but it just didn’t have enough power.

I agree it’s nice to tweak these within having to go into bios. Just wish it could be done without a reboot! Maybe Zen 4…

Anyone have throttling issues with their 5800x? Mine is sitting at 84 deg even chilling at desktop, vcore is likw 1.11-1.15 V. Gaming it immediately spikes to 89-90 and throttles.

I had built the rig in july with an MSI AIO 240mm cooler and that had issues from the get go. Put my old h100i on and it seemed better for a bit, but have the abive issues still.

Have an h150 360 mm on order to compensate but i had removed paste and reapplied mx-4 between both coolers. Rad is in top mount config exhausting out. Not sure if moving to front mount/intake will be better, or even an option with the new 360mm but considering it. Any other glaring possibilities im overlooking?

Those temps are ridiculously high @ idle. Either that AiO is defective or there's something wrong under the IHS on your 5800x. Or there's something else going on. Have you looked at power consumption @ idle?

Unfortunately it seems im a bigger idiot than that and i shouldve gone with the simplest fix: i opened up my case and tightened down on each bracket screw for the HS mount as snug as i could. Two were snug but not quite finger tight.

Fired it up and it idled at 30-40 deg C at desktop. Thats better. Fired up a game and did some trial runs while monitoring the cpu temp and temps spiked to low 70s with averages in low 60s. Fan speed used to be 100% even when it was sitting at desktop, now its barely noticeable.

I think I'll still put the new 360 mm cooler on for future use and sell both the h100i and the MSI cooler. The h100i is like 6 years old so whatever, the MSI i used for like 2 months.

Man im dumb.

Seeing 5800X's going for ~$200-$250 used on ebay right now is killing me. This is with 20+ bids, so it looks like users are deciding the price cap of used 5800x's.

I've made a promise to myself that I'll only upgrade my core components after I secure a GPU upgrade at a reasonable price (and they're still not reasonably priced IMO). I might take this ancient 6600K rig into its 7th year at this rate.

Overall, a very affordable upgrade. Will be buying a new PSU for old pc, and downgrading the cooler to a 212 evo I have in my closet.

I'd be content with the 5800x. I am going from a 5775C, so even a base 5600 with 3200 C16 is seeing 2-3x the FPS in the games I play coop. I am fortunate to have already tested the games I want to play on a 5600X and 5800X.
Kerbal Space Program, ARMA 3, R6 Siege, R6 Vegas 2, X4, Sins of a Solar Empire, Supreme Commander, Fallout 4, Deep Rock Galactic, and a few others are all games that support significant AI counts that I want to experience above 30fps.

R6 Siege with 100 AI spawned in puts my current CPU down to around 30-40fps, and will crash the game if I host with too many AI on coop. But my friends' 9700k and 5600X can easily do it. My current i7 can only spawn around 150 AI on Vegas 2, and I wanna see what the game engine can actually go to. I'd love to get some proper benchmark numbers for R6 Siege AI Horde mode, because it is an untested benchmark that is very CPU heavy.

I also feel like it is a bad idea buying any GPU that will lack DP 2.0. 4k144 is actually pretty easy to achieve on low-medium settings, especially on old games. I want 4k144 with HDR with just 1 cable!
