Because my next upgrade will probably be a next gen threadripper with ddr5 + PCI-E 4.0 (although i would love 5.0), as we can safely say intel lost this one again, and i am not paying for a HEDT without at least 128 lanes and have overclocking. (Rules out Threadripper Pro)

i'm not actually surprised if that is true TR does have quad channel ram even if DDR4.

It's Zen3 based and will likely have plenty of bandwidth with quad channel DDR4, as mentioned. If you want more than 64 lanes of PCIe 4.0 (why?), then buy and EPYC system

Since the Zen 3 TR is not even out yet that's technically "next gen" and doesn't have DDR5. You'll need to wait for the gen after that (the Zen 4 based one), I'm sure that one will have DDR5.

Not sure what rules out TR Pro, your demand for at least 128 lanes sounds like you'll need TR Pro or Epyc to get that.

Yeah, was pretty happy when they passed 25 cycles testmem 1usms cfg, after spending close to 2 weeks tweaking settings


Can also run even tighter tRFC, but haven't manage to stabilize them for 25 cycles yet.. (passes ~15) But can bench with them no problem if i want

Got around to tweaking memory for first time in a long time. Any obvious things to improve here, or errors or something that is not optimal? I don't know DDR4 memory tricks or theory, the guides with subsettings are very confusing and complex...

Sticks are G.Skill TridentZ DDR4-3400 C16 DC SR - 32GB from 2016 at 1.40v, Samsung b-die AFAIK. Motherboard is Asus X570-E with 5900X.



I did try C15 when the board was new and it didn't work but I haven't tried since. I tried tRFC 260 just now and it did not boot.

It is a bit of a pain when this mobo doesn't boot, I can't get into BIOS without backflashing with an USB stick and the backpanel button. On my two last previous boards (also Asus but the Hero series,) I could always get back into BIOS from the keyboard.

I might buy a X570S based motherboard shortly after they release as I don't want an X570 based motherboard with a chipset fan and the Dark Hero x570 motherboard is way more than I want to pay for a motherboard. I right now have an Asus B550-F Strix Wi-Fi with the 5800x installed and I think I may be experiencing compatibility issues with my iPhone 12 on all USB ports except the ones on the lower area of the IO Shield, as I'm not having this issue with other USB devices included my iPhone 5s. It won't detect files in my iPhone 12 once connected to my PC through those USB ports and if I disconnect and reconnect my iPhone 12 it then won't even detect my iPhone 12 next time even though I get the Authorization message showing on my iPhone 12's screen once the USB cable is connect to the PC. The latest BIOS and chipset drivers didn't solve the issue and it happens in both Windows 10 and Linux Mint 20.2. It might just be a defective motherboard but I doubt it since my iPhone 12 is the only USB device that I'm having issues with this motherboard. Does the x570 chipset have better compatibility with USB devices than the B550 chipset? If compatibility is important to me, should I have gone x570 instead of B550 back then?

My Noctua U12A heatsink does not get hot while running Cinebench 20, it's just feels warm, but the hottest core on my CPU hits 90C within 20 seconds while the heatsink is just warm at that point. I heard that if the heatsink does not feel hot that means that there is poor contact with the CPU and heatsink and therefore heat dissipation is poor. My 5800x at 90C in Cinebench 20 maintains 4.4-4.5 GHz and the resulting score is around 6000. I did try PBO with Curve Optimizer set to -20 offset for all-core but regardless, it still hits 90C within 20 seconds, only it runs a little faster. I right now have $20 worth of BB gift cards and the H100i iCUE AIO is on sale for $140 at BB and the H150i iCUE is on sale for $168 at BB. I have a Meshify C case with the 2 stock fans as intakes and a CoolerMaster Silent 120mm as rear exhaust. Am I better off buying the H100i iCUE and top mounting the radiator and setting it's fans as exhaust or am I better off buying the H150i iCUE and front mounting the radiator and setting it's fans as intake? I also have a GTX 1080 Ti that reaches 84C in the Unigine Heaven benchmark within a minute, so I don't want my GPU temperature to get hotter or throttle more if I decide to get a 360mm AIO and front mount it.

i'm on a H150 right now and I still hit 90c in CB so that isn't going to make a huge difference. However it doesn't matter to me because none of my workloads push it as hard. So not to concerned with it hitting that in a benchmarking app that doesn't reflect my real world usage.

My H150 is front mounted with Intake fans infront of the RAD.

I do have PBO on + 200 mhz + CO

PPT is at 200W
TDC is at 140A
EDC is at 160A

I would go AIO just to avoid that fan ramping up noise. Its the same reason I would slap an AIO on a GPU. When the rest of your system is quiet even under full load having to listen to a fan going up in RPM's can be very annoying.

If you keep messing with PPT, TDC, EDC you should be able to bring the temp down but you also want to monitor how much of a performance loss. Then try to find a happy medium.

I don't ever see temps that high normally since none of my workloads are cinebench.

They likely are. Qualities like being able to achieve high frequencies and being efficient at it are not necessarily linked though (and since there are now high frequency Epyc chips as well the CCDs doing both very well at once likely go there instead).

So swapped the CPU with the spare, did not connect the fan on the heatsink on purpose, closed it up and went to work. Works like a charm, the thing throttles like a champ and continues to trawl away.
This crappy case has a glass side so you can see through it (did t even know that until I unpacked the thing).. and that glass gets so hot you will burn yourself touching it. The 3080ti gets insanely hot! And the way the board is laid out means it sits 2cm’s away from the cpu heatsink.
I guess something is off with the other chips thermal/throttling mechanic.
I even went DOCP without problems.

I am gonna test the chip in the other setup before returning it, just to make sure its not some weird odd combo that sets it off.

Is the system at stock settings or PBO is on an CO?

Have you ran corecycler on that machine while everything was at default settings?

5950X? Yeah. 5800X? I'm not so sure about that. 3800X wound up being a really good bin but that's ancient history by now.

Even with a pretty beastly air cooler, my 5900X got up to a maximum of 91C at one point according to coretemp. It seems the newer, high end desktop CPUs run hotter these days in general due to more aggressive boosting compared to the older CPUs.
