Has AMD commented about availability of the new 5000 series processors? Should it be better than the last time?

Here in Czechia at launch only 1 retailer had them in stock, 5950X and 5900X went quickly, 5800X and 5600X held a little bit longer but in about half an hour all were gone. None to be seen anywhere now.

24k pre-orders from one etailer? Jeebus.
I've read the ShopBLT's pre-orders number is actually Ingram Micro's pre-orders number for multiple etailers including ShopBLT. Also, isn't this just another ShopBLT sliding ETA window? Usually the ETA gets pushed back a few days before. Does anyone have different info.?

Don't mean to sound too negative, it is good to have the option to simply get into a queue and I'm sure ShopBLT isn't the one pushing back the ETA dates.

I'll wait till I can get a decent GPU before I buy a CPU (for upgrading my main system). By the time a GPU can be had at decent price, the next gen threadrippers will probably be out, or Zen5 (given the time it takes for FABs to come online and the lack of news of any new FABs from TSMC until 2023 or 2024)...

With the current situation of logistics and supply and demand, I may wait to see if a "Zen3+" is going to happen later this year and just skip the planned 3900X to 5900X; use the 5800X as the wife's upgrade from i7 920 (yes, huge leap!).

Ugh. This shouldn't be so hard.
Yup I know. This happened several times to me. Even on the 3090's. I figured there won't be many people wanting a 3090 so why not? Nope.

Months ago I was actually able to get one in the cart but by the time best buy sent me the 2 factor authentication code to my phone or email(arrived 25 min later) the cards were gone.

Another time I got all the way to "place order" except of course the store to pick it up from didn't have it anymore and it said to pick another store but the other stores were also doing the same thing basically making it impossible to finish check out.

Apparently they won't ship them on the east coast.

Pondering to buy a 5600x or 5800x.

Been rocking 6C/12T since 2013. Sandybridge to Zen 2 was a huge jump.

I will be migrating the 3600 to my wife's new build, she is coming from a 3570k @ 4 ghz so it'll similarly be a real jump.

I've come by a 6700xt by way of trading my 5700xt and this seems to be the time to "complete" my AM4 experience.

Even if it was available, the 5900x is out of my comfort zone, price wise. The 5800x is "on sale" at MC for $430. I wish it were less but 🤷‍♂️

Or I just stay the course and get the 5600x with is super efficient operation and... yeah. It's a pretty elegant CPU.

Those of you choosing 5800x over 5600x - why? Maybe I will agree with you :D

Short answer, after AMD released the Ryzen 7 1700 at $329, 8 cores was made mainstream and affordable (in relation to the high entry cost of X79 / X99). So to me, 8 cores is the new minimum for a CPU released since Zen 1.

If you plan on keeping these as long as your Sandy and Ivy CPU's, get the 5800X. The temp can be lowered just by adjusting PPT in BIOS. (see the 5000 series builders thread for extra tweaking info)

If you are *just* gaming, get the 5600X. But, who *just* games on a PC? :)

Efficiency wise AM4 8/16 cores are better. AMD flogs 6/12 cores way past their efficiency curve up to their power package limit just because they can. And it doesn't really help performance that much - see 3700x/3800x/3800xt. I reduced PPT on my 3900x from default 142W to 100W and only lost 5% in performance which is ridiculous. In 3950x those extra 40W go towards feeding extra 4 cores but in 3900x they're simply wasted. At least AMD set 5600x TDP to 65W instead of ridiculous 95W for 3600X, but again, a full working chiplet is always better efficiency wise. I'm still on Zen2 right now, but when it's time to upgrade my strong preference will be for 8 cores for wife and 16 cores for me.

Went the ebay route. Wish there was normal stock. l will wait for GPU prices to come down before I upgrade my video card. I will suffer with my measly 1080 Ti until then.

With the 5800X running $430 at MC, you're paying a $3.75 ($30/8) per core premium. For that $30 premium, you get a full working chiplet and it's a bit more future proofed. On the gaming side of things, the PS5 and XSX both have roughly 8-core Zen 2 CPUs, so I think games will be developed going forward with 8-cores in mind. Also, for any multi-threaded tasks outside of gaming, those 2 extra cores make a huge difference.

I am finding these arguments very persuasive... 🤔

Also, knowing myself, it is likely that I am not going to invest more once the socket is officially “dead” and the next generation of chips and chipsets is available for purchase. If having the 5800x vs the 5600x can help me hold out even one additional generation/refresh it will have been money well spent.

I'm pretty sure you can keep the 5800x for a while if you are not looking to upgrade to the next platform immediately. I would be looking to keep an upgrade for some time if I have to change motherboards anyway. It should be decent for games as well as productivity. If you do a lot of processing or editing obviously the 59 or 5950 benefits more.

amazon taking preorders for the 5800X.

I am still chasing after the golden goose aka.. 5900X. :T

I think my 6900XT may fall out of warranty before i even get it tho.
Although i do admit not looking for it hardcore enough because i wanted to wait for the new bios on the usb3 fix for X570 before i started building this machine, but i still do find it very ironic how i was able to get a RTX 3070 + RTX 3090 + 6900XT+ before even trying to secure the CPU.

If anyone knows a reputable vendor outside me having to camp in front of microcenter, that has 5900X @ retail msrp and in stock i would greatly appreciate it.

If you are *just* gaming, get the 5600X. But, who *just* games on a PC? :)

raises hand... i tend to keep my PC's dedicated for one task only.
So my main machine is a dedicated gaming PC, the office a dedicated productivity machine, and servers are real servers with ECC REG ram.

But IMO, i am seeing some performance benefits of a 5900X over a 5800X for that extra +$50, which is why i am hunting that 5900X.
A 5950 vs 5900X although is not enough of a boost for me to hunt that tho over the cost difference.

l will wait for GPU prices to come down before I upgrade my video card.

lol good luck... i think you may find yourself in a better position to just sign up @ eVGA queues for a RTX, unless your after a 6000 series XT.

If the AMD Reddit leaked roadmap is true, and my gut is right (AM4 gets one more CPU to really stick it to Intel), I think I may end up waiting for Zen3+ instead of a 5900X at this point. :(

I never really thought about this, but it makes perfect sense. The "best" non-dual config is a 5800X, as a 5600X seems like they would disable 2 cores to meet the power targets as it would take too much voltage to run the 8 cores.

Watched this review a while back, highlights your point quite well.
