Probably a repost - but I was browsing the AMD site and noticed that their roadmap just changed. I was looking for the price-cuts that supposedly occured yesterday, but couldn't find any (except the mobile 2200+ chip was released at a really low price.)

Edit: dang I just realized I became what I dislike - a poster that posts a link and didn't say anything really useful. Ok here are some thoughts. The durons are still pointing right up to 2004. Looks like AMD still isn't ready to kill them off despite all the rumors that they will die early. Bartons are still sitting on the 2002/2003 line, meaning we had better see them real soon - if AMD wants to avoid another backlash of a delayed product. They are finally killing of the Athlon MP - to be replaced with Hammer, but looks like it will take AMD a full year if not more to do so. Thus they must still think the MP will have a great value to the customers. However the Barton will live on for quite some time. AMD must still not be confident enough yet that Hammer can outperform it in the price/performance region.

That roadmap seems a bit optimistic. AMD just barely got their .13nm process out of the door and they think they can transition to .09nm by 2004?

What are you talking about? Sure, AMD has recently worked out a few kinks in their .13um process, but its hardly "just barely out the door". They started .13um CPUs with the 2200+ back in June or July (Yes, I realize it was late July/early August before they were really shipping in volume to retailers, but still...). It is interesting (though far from surprising) that they pushed back their .09 line (was originally slated for 2H03).

Judging by AMD's own roadmap, I should be able to by a Barton core XP by now. "Optimistic" may be too generous a term for AMD's projections.
Intel has had a 512KB cache CPU out for a while now. Come on AMD, get your act together. People may get tired of waiting a go take a walk in the North Woods. ;)

Erm, what are you talking about? According to AMD's roadmap the Barton will be released in 4Q02 or1Q03, considering that we're only barely half way through 4Q02, I don't see how you can say that it should be out now. As long as they release it on or before March 31st, 2003, then the roadmap will have been accurate.

From what I have heard, going from .13mm to .09mm is easier than it was going from .18mm to .13mm. I have a strong feeling that .09mm will be out by that time since they have a lot of time to tinker with it.

Their roadmap shows that the Barton core will be out in the 4th quarter of 2002. The 4th quarter of 2002 started on October 1st.
The date today is November 13th... They haven't made it yet.

Let's be honest, there's no way they will have the Barton core out before the end of the year or probably even halfway through 2003.

I stayed an AMD'r because of Barton coming out in October... which turned out to be "optimistic". :p

Don't hold your breath, regular 2800+ have to get to the market first. Perhaps Bartons will start appearing in OEM systems near the end of the year, but I doubt you'll be able to pick them up at Newegg.

I have a soyo board with KT333 chipset, will it be able to run the barton processor or I have to buy a new board?

Um, go take another look at the road map. Look at the little blue rectangle representing Barton. Notice that half of said little blue rectangle is is on the 2H02 (the part representing 4Q02) section of the roadmap and that the other half is on the 1H03 (the part representing 1Q03) section of the roadmap.

As for that link you provided, it says nothing about Bartons "probably not even showing up until halfway through 2003". In fact, here is the only paragraph from that article that mentioned Barton (note that the article is actually quoting The Inquirer):

"Barton is still there, straddling the first half of next year and in both XP and notebook versions, with the Opteron, the Athlon MP, also based on the Barton core, and the Clawhammer all sitting in the first half of 2003 as well."

If you read that paragraph very carefully, you will see that even the article you provided backs up what I said.

Right, the AMD roadmap shows that the Barton is scheduled out approximately October 02 - May 03. This is halfway through November 02 and no Barton core yet.
I interjected "probably not even showing up until halfway through 2003". I'm sorry but that did sound like I was referring to the article... it was not.
It was referring to AMD's record of disappointing rollouts of hyped CPU's. ;)
Sure they can rollout one after the other CPU's with a 60-70MHz bump. But when it comes to big-time advancements, they stumble over their own hype.

Don't get me wrong, I've got two AMD systems and wish them all the best. I like competition to keep Intel hustling. I'd rather be surprised by a Barton core type inovation than disappointed when one is not brought to market on time.

AMD... AMD... GO TEAM GO! :D

I'm guessing there will probably be a "release" sometime late Dec/early Jan with actual market availability in Feb/March. Hopefully they'll have their yield issues worked out by then, and will have the chip available sooner - with the P4's HT, they desperately need to get Barton out as soon as possible!

I've heard that the Barton will support SSE2. Also, per their licensing agreement, AMD is required to wait until 2003 to use CPU's that use SSE2. Could it actually be that they will launch the Barton on Jan 1, 2003 with same week availability? Time will tell, I'll leave it at that.

Peace.
