Hi,

I am planning to build a NAS Server using an AMD Richland. First of all, I am surprise that the low-power series 25W to 17W are not available in retails. These CPUs are announced in this article The third prong of AMD’s new mobile assault: Lower power Richland APUs. Will these low-power CPUs be available for desktop?

Also looking at the Richland which are currently available in retail. How come the A4-4000 A4-5300 and A10-6700 are all 65W? I would expect the A4-4000 to have half the TDP of the A10-6700.

Ultimately, can you please recommend me a low-power CPU for a NAS server, whether AMD or Intell? In reality, may be the TDP doesn't matter. Because probably the NAS Server will be idle 95% of the time.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

AMD is very lazy with binning for TDP on those lower end parts. I'm sure some of them will approach 65W but the huge majority of them will be closer to 40W. What's more you will be able to under volt them by a lot to get them even lower on power draw.
