AMD retail packaging rant

I'm putting together my new PC. I ordered the AMD Athlon XP2100+ retail because I do not plan to overclock this computer. Anyway, the new AMD, hang-on-the-perfboard-hook-in-the-glass-case packaging sux! I carefully tried opening the plastic. It seems every edge is welded shut. So I carefully used an airline-hi-jacker handy-dandy razor knife to open the package. There are separate compartments and each one is sealed from the other. I understand that AMD's packaging is significantly different than Intel's, and it is an attractive display box. But make it easier to open! (They do supply a case sticker 😉 ) Just my .02.

maybe haveing each compartment "welded" together creates a air pocket type thing which prevents crushing?

i dunno just an early afternoon thought when im most sleepy 😉

but yeah intels is pretty easy to open, i havnt opened a retail amd yet, mostly because i have never bought retail amd so far lol

i agree about AMDs new packageing makes it very hard to get it apart. i use a box cutter very carefully to cut it open

i also like the fact however i can see what i am buying meaning stepping etc on the chip. where as the old box idea you had a mystery on your hands till you opened it up

well those are my ideas

I thought I would have seemed like a moron posting something like this.
I HATE THEIR NEW PACKAGING!!!!!!

sucks so bad.

Whoever invented that packaging should be shot! I'm not talking about cpu packaging, but EVERYTHING that's packaged like that!

Xmas morning is such a PITA when every toy my kids get takes me 1/2 an hour to open up. And that's assuming I don't chop up something that was necessary.

The CPU itself is sealed into a smaller flip-open packet that doesn't require a demolition expert to open, so you won't have bent pins even if it did go flying. I would have to give the retail package high marks for tamper resistance, anyway. I use a razor knife to cut through both layers of the outer package on three sides and I can take it from there. 😀

I'm glad I'm not the only one that felt this way. I did manage to get the CPU out, installed and loading the nForce2 drivers now. WOOHOO! And yeah Wingznut all that "welded" plastic packaging sux!

<---that would be my luck

dont forget you'd see it fly to the floor and bend the pins in slow motion🙂

It really does suck - worst of all it's RUINED once you open it , so returning the CPU to a retailer is less attractive to a retailer (unlike intel cpu's which can be re-boxed and even re-shrink wrapped easily if they have a shrink wrapper)

guys, you're talking about the packaging now.
GO OUTSIDE! 😉😛

ps. is there any big diff between the OEM & retail, other than the apparently shitty packaging, a definately shitty HSF and a ickle but somehow less shitty badge to inform case-inspectors what your cpu is?

The warranty is also significantly different. 3 years for Retail and it's up to the individual seller for OEM (usually 30-90 days.)

As for the chip itself... No, there isn't any difference.

My tip:

Take a knife, run it along 3 edges on the back of the packaging, on that little kinda raised bit, then it all falls open from there 🙂 If you attack it from the front it takes you 3x as long! 🙂

What's your advice for a Leap Pad book (kid's toy)? 😉

😀 As I chortle out loud. 😀

Never thought this thread would amuse... BTW my new PC and sh*tty packaged CPU is running SWEET!

I'll continue the thought:

In these days of people sueing McDonalds because their burgers have too much fat and people sueing gun disributors because a certain gun was used in a crime, it absolutely astounds me that companies can sell stuff in these blister packs. Anything that requires a razor blade or scissors and copious amounts of force and dexterity to open is a lawsuit waiting to happen.

If I was God, the top things on my sh*tlist would be lawyers, SUVs, blister-packs and cell-phones.
