AMD retail heatsink/fan vs. AMD retail copper pipe version

I have the AMD X2 4600+ 2.4GHz cpu retail box. It came with the dinky aluminum heatsink and fan that most of them come with. It's been running just fine with it, but i recently came across a brand new AMD retail boxed version of the copper heatpipes. It definitely looks a lot nicer than the standard AMD one. How much better is it and is it worth changing out for $14?

Just put the $14 towards something more worthwhile, I forget what the best cheap heatsinks are but I think you can get decent stuff around $25.

$14....ya, I'd get it.

Best OEM HSF ever!

EDIT: new is a BiG bonus

Looking nice is good if it was Jewelry

However, what do you expect it would do for your CPU?

Make it make it feel proud that it has nice looking HSF.;)

The 939 4600+ X2 retail boxed came with the heatpipe. Did they get cheap with the AM2 versions?
You can find 70MM and 80MM fan versions of the AMD heatpipe, and 4 and 2 pipe versions. They still send the heatpipe with the 6000+ X2, and I know of one user that has seen good temps with the AMD heatpipe on a 6000+ X2.

The AC 64 is a good HSF, but my experience shows it's not a better cooler compared to the AMD heatpipe, though it is much quieter.

You can also gain RPM, and better cooling, on the heatpipe by shorting out the thermistor on it, but that will make it loud. I have done this myself, and then controlled RPM in the bios to go high at a certain temp.
Ability to alter the thermistor and control RPM can vary with the 4 pin fans you see with AM2 boards, so read up first.

If you are content with the performance of your stock heatsink and don't plan to overclock any higher than whatever you're at right now, then don't waste $14.

Me? I'd buy one up at that price just for a spare. :D Well, if it was the "right" one.

There are THREE different retail box AMD heatsinks with heatpipes. One has only two heatpipes and uses a thin 60mm or 70mm fan. The second one has four heatpipes and uses a thin 70mm fan. The third one is the beast to get... it has four heatpipes and uses an 80x20mm fan. That unit has been shown to be nearly on par with any number of aftermarket heatpipe units (using fans 92mm or smaller).

I say if you're overclocking, it will be worth it. If you aren't, it isn't worth it, unless you feel like you need a spare.

I actually have seen more than 3 varieties. Some were made by Foxconn, Cooler Master, others
I think the one Zap is describing is the one made by Coolermaster for AMD. It's very well made.
Link

I have used them all, just about, and have not seen much of a cooling difference
between the different versions. YMMV, with case cooling, etc.

I see on the bay they are selling several different versions of the heatpipe

Now that I think of it, that's the one I had and not the 70mm fan. It was 80mm but thinner.

You're right, it did cool quite well but it was freakin' loud even still.

I have the AMD heatpipe unit and it works great. Mine has the 2-pipes per side and the 4-pin cool n quiet capability. I got mine brand new on ebay for $15 shipped. The guy I bought it from claimed that the 4-pipe perside 3-pin vers would not work on an AM2. which I think was not right, not sure.

Go for it for a paultry $14 you cant go wrong. there are plenty of heatsink shoot-outs out there that rate these very high.

He's raised his price, mine was $15 shipped :)
