AMD retail 2500+ @ newegg $83

the multiplier's locked, but that really isn't necessary at all to overclock this thing. you can make it a top of the line cpu with some decent memory and a few seconds of your time in this bios. but on a lighter note, that is a HOT deal.

Yup. Set 200 FSB and CPU to agressive. Done.

Not bad at all, accompany that chip with this board: BIOSTAR nForce2 IGP , this Case = $186 shipped. Then accompany it with the 512MB Kingston Value Ram 333mhz for $49 from Officemax, and you've got a cheap ready to go system. Or pay the extra for 3200 RAM and make this 3200+ processor.

Don't forget to add in the Keyboard and mouse!

G'luck

And keyboard and mouse are FAR at OM tomorrow 🙂
I've been looking at computers, and think I may just build using this deal. I'm completely noob to OC... is it really that easy?! Should I get a better heat sink than what comes in the box with it?
Edit: time for me to do some studying... case is standard ATX, the linked board is microATX... microATX will work in ATX?

Yes, mATX boards fit in ATX cases.

Nice prices all around the web but I myself would stick with newegg just because I have dealt with them before, though ZipZoomFly and eWiz have good ratings, and when I build my next PC they will include free t-shirt, pen, hat, etc. with my order. And, the difference of $.50 to $2.00 is not going to break me.

I would just try and go with the retail sink. It has a patch of Shin Etsu on as a TIM. The retail sink is actually very good. Overclocking is very easy with an NF2 chip on board. Just increase the FSB in the bios and stay with the default VCore and see how high the chip will go.

Most people are hitting 200 FSB without upping the VCore. In a well ventilated case this HSF does a very good job of cooling and is very quiet. Just let your Sink run for 3 days and the TIM will settle and your temps should be about 1-3 degrees C lower that when you first build your rig.

Yeah, but from what I've seen most of the multiplier locked 2500+ chips seem to be especially receptive to FSB overclocking. I got mine late last year, and even though it is multiplier locked it hit a 200 MHz FSB on stock voltage with out any issues (and typically runs belows 45 C even overclocked and under load). And this is on a rev 1.04 A7N8X that wasn't really even originally designed for 200 MHz FSB operation.

nice price and nice chip. I had a 2500+ @ 3200+ system before I migrated to a p4 system. Can't say I notice any difference in games. definetly excellent value here.

Anyone know if the price likely to be much lower in summer? I'm not planning to upgrade until them. I'm currently overseas and won't be able to do much before then.

My 1700+ still running at 2300 - cost me $69 over a year ago...heh. Just avoid Livewarehouse at all costs - worst cust. service of any place I've used.

PS - Oh and YES, get a better heatsink!!! Do not run stock cooling at 2200.

I bought mine from newegg ($87 5 montsh ago) with the abit nf7 nforce2 mobo... have a gig of ram runnin in dual channel....

processor currently is at 2258mhz stable.... thats over 3200+ speeds....

Retail HSF is decent. It has a copper base with aluminum fins. It will get you going even up to 2.2ghz. Just have a well cooled case.
