Amd Renames 57xx to 67xx

Rebranding remains dumb.

If AMD is happy enough with 5770 performance they felt a simple features bump was enough for the rename, that's well and good--but what do these cards have the 5700 series didn't? HDMI 1.4?

Is Nvidia planning to release a gf116 (aka gf106 with all the memory controllers activated?) Even if it only has 768mb of ram, I'm pretty sure the extra texturing power and (probably) bumped up core clock speeds would be more than enough to decidedly beat the 5770/6770.

28nm isn't coming until Q4.... this could be a long year of pain for AMD's graphics division.

I think the biggest problem with the 5830 was the drivers. They were horrid.

I think people would be justified to be "up-in-arms" if AMD had decided to re-brand and re-box 2 straight generations of every single chip in their previous lineup with a new, higher model number..... But.... they didn't.....

Now, that's not to say I am willing to let AMD off the hook for this tactic, but at least they seem to be making the most logical business decision.

As long as they are stuck on 40nm, it makes no sense to push out a new low-mid to budget range chip. It just wouldn't be profitable (or, as profitable as Juniper is).

If they do this when 28nm is out, sure, cheap move.

Agreed. It always sucks, but at least this is limited to OEMs so we aren't getting rebadges that will show up on the Egg or other stores.

AMD has to cater to their customers, and OEMs want new sounding cards so they can cater to theirs. Average user probably isn't going to do much research when buying a midrange system, but seeing a 5770 will look bad when more expensive models are 6XXX.

They are the ones buying a 6850 for 289$ and think there getting a great deal.

I know quite a few at work. Mostly they're buying systems so their kids can play games and have NO CLUE what they hell they're doing. They have a budget, the advice of a 12 year old kid, and the Dell / HP / Sony / Compaq website... or worse, a Fry's salesman.

768mb GTX460 makes my 5770 and this 6750/6770 pointless. It's just a beatdown, and they're so cheap. TigerDirect store here in Dallas has them on the shelves for $109.99 I'm saving my pennies for a 560 though.

2 5750's in crossfire is equal to or faster then a 5850 which is faster then a 6850.

So no a 6850 does not have "even nearly" double the performance of a 5770.

You're ignoring the fact that tessellation and DX11 is the future, the HD6850 destroys the 5770 at both.

Can't forget about resolution either, you go try putting an HD5770 @ 1080p playing BC2, the 6850 is definitely twice as better. Frames might not tell you the story, but gameplay will sure do.

HD6850 is nearly twice as better than the 5770, specially in more modern and upcoming games. You can say whatever you want, but benchmarks only tell a part of the story, the real scores come out in gameplay.
