looks like there's an error in the pcmag article, the X3 435 should be $87, not $187

I haven't been following CPUs for a while, so from the perspective of someone coming out of the woods, a 45w 2.2 ghz quad for $133 is pretty impressive looking to me.

Good for AMD, if they can consistently fill the low energy cheap quad market they will be able to sell alot of processors.

they should make some mobile quads, 45W is the same as Clarkfield (and 55w for extreme)...

Wow that's cheap... even I want one to replace my 5 year old system (to play my sluggish 5 year old game of EQ2)

AMD's low end is a confusing mess, way too many sku's.

They should just whack the X2 parts.

Esp since the price difference between an X2 and X3 is almost nothing.

Yahoo.

That Athlon II X2 240e together with an amd770 mainboard would considerly lower power consumption and still would be reasonably powerfull. Secretly i am still hoping for An Athlon II X2 250e at TDp of 45W. An AMD770 chipset must consume far less then 3W idle and 10 W maximum load because these numbers belong to the 790 chipset, which is it's doublesized brother.

This may seem like a strange choice, but i have seen that the HD4870 cards are really cheap. And since only HD4870 cards have a blower that can blow outside the case(in my area) i am considering this videocard. But since it's so fast i am actually thinking of lowering the clocks for a more decent powerconsumption. I am still considering though...

The 235e and 240e X2's look like nice replacements for the 4850e/5050e. The 605e X4 is yummy for my ITX build, but the $143 price tag is not so yummy. Yet, I find myself reaching for my credit card. Help! :p

I wonder if AMD has thought about chopping off the L3 from Thuban and making an Athlon II X6. Heck, why not squeeze 2 more cores in and go all the way to make an Athlon II X8???

I'm guessing (and time will tell) there is serious unlocking potential between the Athlon II X3s ---> X4s.

AMD may howl and complain to mobo vendors but they've found a marketing niche for those willing to tinker (and they are not going to give that up). I would also suspect a number of these to pop up in OEMs (which would also eliminate the unlock because of BIOS limitations)

How about MCM 2 of these 45w cores to make 90w Octa cores? or even 135w 12 cores. That would be awesome.

Would that not cause way to much main memory traffic ?
I am guessing if all those cores need data, AMD really needs prefetchers like Intel has. I would not be surprised there really is a point of diminishing return when adding more cores without the cache to keep the cores busy. A possibility would be triple/quadruple memory banks, i guess.

Some of these cpus will go to large oem customers first. If you see them at newegg, better order them fast. They may not be available for long. Newegg was one of the only venders that got the 45w dual core cpus a few months ago, and now they're gone.

My 605e works wonderfully in my HTPC. A passive heatsink w/ 120mm PWM controlled case fans keeps everything chilly and it still has the muscle to do encoding.

What would the market be for an Athlon II X6? Thuban is already going to be mostly a niche market with HPC I would think.
